Position Title Library/Media Assistant II II. Position Description Under general supervision, operates and maintains the Library/Media Center at an elementary or other school site, including circulation, card catalog and organizing book and media materials so as to maintain an attractive and stimulating learning environment; selects and recommends books for purchase; assists teachers and students in using library/media facilities and resources; maintains shelf lists; orders supplies, conducts inventories and records statistical data on library use; and to do related work as may be required. This class is characterized by the responsibility for maintaining a school library at a site to which there is no Librarian assigned. Incumbents assigned to elementary schools or other school sites have major responsibility for the operation of the library and receives limited assistance from a supervisor on a continuing day-to-day basis. III. Example of Duties/Responsibilities A. Selects books for replacement in addition to existing library collection, recommends for purchase within a pre-determined budget-E B. Selects and orders library supplies-E C. Catalogs materials purchased for school-E D. Processes new, hard bound, paperbacks and periodicals E. Takes inventory of collection annually-E F. Culls or weeds library collection to remove obsolete, damaged, or withdrawn books G. Prepares and maintains library schedules for class visits to library H. Prepares charts in charging-out process with pockets and names of every student I. Prepares and distributes bills for lost or damaged books J. Prepares and presents library skill lessons and teaches to classes K. Maintains an attractive learning environment, plans, designs, and decorates bulletin boards, interest and realia centers-E L. Assist teachers in selecting materials, stimulate and guide students in the use of library resources, reads stories to children M. Maintains regular inspection and repair program for books N. Oversees audio-visual equipment and material circulation O. Assesses audio-visual equipment and may make minor repairs and adjustments and order new and replacement equipment as needed P. Attends monthly in-service meeting Q. May supervise assigned assistants, student and parent volunteer helpers R. Does typing, record keeping, and files as necessary (E) – Essential IV. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of •Library methods, practices and terminology •Dewey Decimal System •Card catalog and basic reference sources •Children’s needs promoting certain reading materials •Alphabetizing, filing, record keeping and statistical compilation •English, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary •Student supervision and human relations •Children’s literature Ability to: •Type 30 words per minute •Relate to children and their needs •Follow written and oral instructions •Communicate effectively with students, staff and parents •Learn the operation and function of a variety of audio-visual equipment •Organize a library and work effectively without close supervision, be self-motivated and be able to find answers and resources on one’s own initiative License or Certificate •Possession of a valid California Driver’s License. •Library Technical Assistant, or Library Media Technical Assistant Certificate desirable. 1. A completed EDJOIN classified application 2. Copy of High School Diploma OR GED Certificate, or a copy of college transcripts showing proof of high school graduation or higher education. (PROOF OF EDUCATION MUST ACCOMPANY APPLICATION) 3. Certificate of Keyboarding/Typing of 30 WPM or more (NO ONLINE TYPING/KEYBOARDING CERTIFICATES WILL BE ACCEPTED).

Certificate of Keyboarding/Typing of 30 WPM or more must include the following: 1. Name of Organization administering the exam 2. Your Name, first and last 3. Date exam was taken (within the past 12 months) 4. Certificate must be signed by proctor of the exam *ONLINE KEYBOARDING/TYPING TESTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. *COPIES OF DOCUMENTS SUBMITTED MUST BE LEGIBLE. *Library Technical Assistant Certificate or Library Media Technical Assistant Certificate *Prior to employment, all applicants are subject to a fingerprint clearance through the Department of Justice (DOJ) and a fee for processing. Authorization of employment will not be granted until the fingerprint clearance from DOJ has been accepted.
