School Nurse

Position Summary

We are seeking a school nurse to join our Health Office and provide care for PK-12th grade studentsbeginning in early August of the 2021-22 school year. Our Health Office is currently staffed by a full- timeschool nurse and school health aide. The school nurse will care for our students who may be sick, injured,or in need of other medical support; coordinate with parents, science of mind / social emotional learningteachers, counselors, advisors, and other faculty and staff to facilitate quality of care; coordinate healthscreenings; provide relevant and timely continuing education opportunities for students, parents, andcolleagues; and help supervise and direct emergency drills and resources and coordinate relationships withthird party resources and services. The successful candidate should have experience with direct patientcare and working with pediatric patients from early childhood to adolescence.

Responsibilities

  • Provides care to students, staff, and faculty in a thorough, skillful and consistent manner.
  • Performs assessment/data collection in an on-going systematic manner, focusing on physiologic,psychosocial, cultural, spiritual and cognitive status.
  • Establish effective working relationships with the health care team and other departments, schooladministration/leadership, faculty/staff members and Nueva students and their families.
  • Maintains immunization, medical, emergency, and other relevant information in HIPAA and FERPAcompliant manner.
  • Ensures that records are kept up to date and appropriately secured and shared in compliant mannerbefore the beginning of each school year and in support of school activities including trips and otheroffsite activities.
  • Maintain and administer over-the-counter and prescription medications for students - epi pens, asthmainhalers, insulin, etc. – in accordance with student treatment plans; including monitoring use andexpiration dates.
  • Coordinates with parents, science of mind / social emotional learning teachers, counselors, advisors,and other faculty and staff to facilitate high quality of care.
  • Coordinate relevant and timely professional development and continuing education opportunities –CPR and first aid training, health and safety education - for employees, students, and parents.
  • Coordinate relevant and timely community health services –for example annual flu vaccination clinicfor students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Inform and train faculty/staff on general and specific risk situations and appropriate responseprotocols.
  • Help supervise and direct emergency drills and coordinate relationships with third party resourcesand services.
  • Serves as a resource to colleagues and the broader community on health and safety.
  • Order and maintain first aid and emergency supplies for both health offices, and emergency kits fortrips.
  • Prepare all medical information for domestic and international school sponsored trips.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree of Science, Nursing preferred. Will consider Licensed Vocational Nurse with priorschool nurse experience.
  • Previous experience with pediatrics or as a school nurse a plus, but not required.
  • Valid California Registered Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse license required.
  • Current health care provider BLS/CPR required. First Aid certification recommended.
  • Personable, positive, helpful personality; customer service mindset.
  • Sensitivity, discretion, and a sense of humor.
  • Calm and effective presence even in emergency situations.
  • Flexible and adaptable.
  • Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills. (Excel, Google Sheets, Outlook and Word experience preferred).
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple, competing, and changing responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships with students, colleagues, and community members.
  • Demonstrated ability to use good judgment and maintain confidentiality.
  • Some summer work may be required (to prepare for subsequent / new school year). Additionalsummer work may be available subject to school needs (e.g. to support summer student programs,etc.).
