DEFINITION: Under the direction of the Director of Student Services, provide tutoring and assistance to students enrolled in the Foster Youth Services program to enhance skills and knowledge in various subject areas; assist students in completing assignments, homework and projects. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or equivalent. Must possess an AA degree or have completed 2 years of college (48 semester units). QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: Child guidance principles and practices; basic subjects taught in District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading; general tutoring and student learning practices and strategies; basic instructional concepts, practices, procedures and techniques used in assigned subject areas; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct; operation of standard office and classroom equipment; oral and written communication skills; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; record-keeping and filing techniques. INSTRUCTIONAL TUTOR/MENTOR

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Director of Student Services, provide tutoring and assistance to students enrolled in the Foster Youth Services program to enhance skills and knowledge in various subject areas; assist students in completing assignments, homework and projects.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Provide tutoring and assistance to individual or small groups of students to enhance skills and knowledge in various subject areas; reinforce classroom instruction by explaining and assisting students in understanding subject matter and related textbooks, instructional materials and concepts.

Asssist students in completing assignments, homework and projects; assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance.

Assist teacher with implementing lesson plans; confer with the teacher concerning lesson plans and materials to meet student needs; explain and assure student understanding of classroom, assignment and homework instructions; assure student understanding of classroom rules and procedures; assist students in researching, compiling and assembling materials as needed; assist students in studying and preparing for tests as required; assist students with developing study skills.

Read books to students and observe their reading abilities as assigned by the position; assist students with letter and word pronunciation and recognition as required; assist students with spelling and writing exercises and assignments.

 Observe and control behavior of students during tutoring activities according to approved procedures; monitor, assess and adjust tutoring and instructional support activities in response to student needs; report progress regarding student performance and behavior.

Maintain student records and files; update student files with permission slips, activities logs, support plans and other documents.

Communicate with staff, faculty and others to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns.

Operate standard office and classroom equipment such as a copier, computer and assigned software.

Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; maintain assigned areas in a safe, orderly and clean manner.

Assist with interviewing and training new mentors; administer student tests to determine appropriate mentor placement as directed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from high school or equivalent.  Special Qualifications upon hire for positions at a school site that is supported by Title I funds pursuant to the "No Child Left Behind Act of 2001":

Complete at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education (college level)

Obtained an associate's (or higher) degree
