GENERAL SUMMARY Responsible for all phases of student personnel services in the school. Provides informational services to students, parents, and teachers which assist the student in making appropriate decisions relative to their educational objectives, their school program, and their relationships with teachers, administrators, parents, and other students. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Abides by responsibilities of the position held through familiarization with State law, Board Policies, the local school handbook, position description, and other information which is distributed through official channels (school mail, U.S. Mail, faculty/District meetings, etc.) 2. Develops and maintains a balanced program of student personnel services which is based on, and carried out through, written behavioral objectives (goals, objectives, and evaluation), which are compatible with the basic goals and philosophy of the school district. 3. Assumes responsibility, under the immediate direction of the Principal, for services in all phases of pupil personnel services at the schools. 4. Assumes duties and responsibilities with respect to the reinforcement of appropriate school behavior and discipline in accordance with State law and District policies and school rules and regulations. 5. Maintains liaison with District student services personnel, community agencies, and parents in relation to special programs of education. 6. Assists school Principal by providing information regarding articulation, enrollment, scheduling, vocational guidance, testing, and other related guidance programs. 7. Provides assistance to teachers, including conferences, to interpret the abilities and needs of students, consultation concerning specialized instruction in guidance courses that may be available and in-service education in guidance techniques and in the interpretation and use of guidance data. 8. Promotes beneficial school, parent, and community relationships by means of parent conferences, reports concerning students, and active participation in community organizations. 9. Is available for counseling with students and parents of students. 10. Formulates, carries out, teaches, and evaluates procedures whereby individual students develop educational plans and are enrolled in the subjects of their choice which meet the needs of their plans. Makes home visits as appropriate, which relate to school problems. 11. Implements District policies and school rules and regulations in emergency situations involving students (suicide threats, child abuse, pregnancies, and narcotics), which occur or are discovered in school settings. 12. May evaluate seniors for graduation requirements, provides for deficiency makeup and notifies parents of seniors who will no meet graduation requirements. 13. Supervises all assigned students in a manner that creates a love of learning, develops students’ knowledge of subject matter and its relation to the world, and develops students’ critical thinking and other basic skills. 14. Provides leadership in developing learning activities to engage students in a variety of activities involving all learning modalities and are brain compatible. 15. Maintains documented files on all activities pertaining to students and records of formalized conferences with teachers and parents. 16. Provides counseling services with students as directed or required. 17. Advises school personnel regarding the need for mental health counseling for pupils and follows through on recommendation. 18. Assists with testing and assessment, and interprets results. 19. May keep students informed of financial aid process. 20. Shares in the supervision of after school student activities and participates in faculty committees. 21. Works in a responsible and collegial manner to achieve quality education for all students. 22. Assumes responsibility for the quality and extent of learning of all students. 23. Performs other duties as directly related to this job function and/or as assigned by the Administrator or designee. Supports all District programs. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: CREDENTIALS, EDUCATION and/or TRAINING: · Pupil Personnel – School Counselor Credential. · Master’s degree in Counseling, including 60 units of selected courses recommended. · Completion of the appropriate intern program to qualify for the designated services credential. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED Knowledge of: · Understanding of the needs of alternative education students. · School instructional and curriculum programs to meet needs of alternative education students. · Community resources to supplement programs for alternative education students. · Student assessment testing. · Effective communication strategies including verbal and written formats. · Effective organizational and communications skills. · Personal computers and software applications. Employees in this position must have the ability to: · Work collaboratively and effectively within the district, the community, and with other agencies. · Be sensitive to many ethnic/social groups. · Compile and analyze data. · See and read a computer screen and printed matter with or without vision aids. · Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone with or without hearing aids. · Speak so others will clearly understand normal at normal levels and on the telephone. · Work at a desk, conference table, or in meetings of various configurations. · Sit and operate a computer keyboard for extended periods of time. · Operate standard office equipment and dial a telephone. · Operate a motor vehicle. · Stand, walk, bend over to maintain files, grasp, reach overhead, stoop, twist, push, pull and move, lift and/or carry 0 to 10 pounds to waist height. Minimum qualifications may be waived on a case-by-case basis by the Superintendent or designee in his/her sole and absolute discretion. WORKING CONDITIONS Employees in this position will be required to work indoors in a standard office environment and travel by motor vehicle in varying degrees of temperature. Moderate to high stress level. OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATES/LICENSES Valid California driver’s license. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Dexterity and physical condition to maintain a rigorous work schedule and meet standards of physical and mental health.
