SANTA ANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT MAINTENANCE WORKER II BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of a Maintenance Supervisor, perform basic and skilled tasks in maintenance and repair of structures, facilities and equipment. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Incumbents in this classification work on semi_skilled and skilled tasks in preparation to become journey-level workers in a particular skilled trade. Incumbents are generalists, but work on the more complicated and diverse functions. Incumbents in the Maintenance Worker I classification are entry-level workers and perform routine and repetitive tasks under close supervision. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Perform general electrical, plumbing and carpentry work on school plants, equipment and furnishings. E Operate truck, forklift, tractor, backhoe, skip-loader, hand tools and other equipment as necessary. E Perform repair on concrete; frame, mix, pour and finish new concrete. E Prepare surfaces for painting and perform routine maintenance painting, sandblasting as necessary. E Perform welding and pipefitting functions; repair roofs, skylights and other existing structures; repair existing stucco walls and plaster interior walls. E Construct walls of stucco; prepare for final color coat; remove and replace damaged tile. E Remodel rooms; remove and replace walls and install window glass. E Repair and install chain link or block fences, playground equipment, chairs, desks, lunch tables and bleachers. E Estimate, order and pick up materials for jobs. E Train, direct and instruct assigned helpers. Serve as substitute for skilled maintenance personnel as appropriate. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Materials, equipment, tools and methods used in a variety of maintenance and repair work. Health and safety regulations. Applicable sections of State Education Code. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: (CONTINUED) ABILITY TO: Read and follow blueprints. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Make simple arithmetic calculations. Work cooperatively with others. Communicate effectively with others. Plan and supervise work. Meet schedules and time lines. Operate power and hand tools related to assignments. Lift heavy objects. Communicate tactfully with students and staff. Perform the essential functions of the job. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and at least one year of experience in general construction or facility maintenance work. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver's license. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Indoor and outdoor work environment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate assigned maintenance tools and equipment. Climbing ladders and working from heights. Walking over rough or uneven surfaces. Lifting and carrying moderately heavy objects, normally not exceeding sixty (60) pounds but occasionally up to one hundred (100) pounds. Heavy physical labor. Seeing to perform maintenance activities, read materials, and drive a vehicle. Standing for extended periods of time. HAZARDS: Fumes from paints and solvents.
