SUBSTITUTE TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION
Purpose Statement:
In the absence of the regular classroom teacher, the substitute teacher provides instruction, encourages student's progress, and manages the learning environment.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- The primary responsibility of the Substitute Teacher is to supervise the children in her/his care and to assure the health, welfare, and safety of all students. Wherever they may be on campus, whether in the library, computer room or playground, Substitute Teachers are responsible for direct student supervision at all times. The California Education Code dictates that students cannot be left in the care of a parent while on campus, except in small groups, at the discretion of the Principal.
- Implement existing lesson plans in a manner that ensures the integrity of academic time and motivates students to learn and participate
- Instruct students regarding a variety of classroom topics and courses of instruction
- Follow lesson plans as required by school policy
- Assign reasonable tasks and homework to students in accordance with the lesson plans
- Address the various learning styles of students accordingly
- Model correct use of spoken and written English language (or German if applicable)
- Demonstrate professional practices in teaching
- Maintain classroom control that fosters a safe, positive environment for all students and staff in accordance with school, state, and all applicable laws and regulations.
For long-term substitute assignments, Substitute Teacher may be required to develop lesson plans; create, administer, and grade tests/assignments; participate in parent-teacher conferences; and attend school related functions. Please note: activities may occur outside of normal school hours.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors degree
- Valid California Teaching Credential or Emergency Teaching Permit
- Fingerprint clearance by the County Office of education
- TB clearance (taken within 60 days of start date)
Knowledge:
- Common Core Standards
- Willingness to learn new information and put new strategies into practice
Other Considerations:
- Report all student injuries, accidents, and illnesses to the front office immediately
- Promptly and proactively inform the Principal of problems (or potential problems) or challenges in the classroom and/or involving parent of intra-staff interaction.
- Supervision before/after school may be required by Substitute Teacher depending on the classroom teacher’s schedule. During supervision duty the Substitute Teacher must closely monitor the behavior of students.
- Doors should always be locked upon leaving classroom.
- Students should NEVER be left in a classroom without adult supervision or placed outside the classroom door in an unsupervised setting.
- Substitute Teachers should not provide students with classroom keys, even for temporary use.
- Substitute Teachers should model responsible energy usage in their classroom.
- General classroom appearance should always be neat and clean and should follow the school dress code of business casual.
- Maintenance or repair problems must be reported to the office or custodian immediately.
- All pathways/walkways within the classroom must be clear of clutter or obstacles at all times, for fire safety reasons.
- School rules state that gum and soda are not allowed on campus; Teachers should provide a model of this requirement.

- Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
- Ability to stand and circulate for extended periods of time.
- Ability to sit on the ground on carpet for extended period of time.
- Ability to lift and move and carry objects of up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to see for purposes of reading music, correspondence, documents and printed matter and observing students.
- Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
- Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand normal conversation.
