Junipero Serra High School is a Catholic college preparatory for boys. Located in San Mateo, in the heart of the San Francisco Peninsula, Serra’s legacy spans over 75 years of excellence in Catholic education. This is a full time Director of Music position, with responsibility for overseeing both choral and instrumental programs. Junipero Serra High School currently has a vibrant musical program that includes an award winning men’s chorus, a jazz band, symphonic band, a music composition course as well as a club singing group. The school collaborates in musical productions with Notre Dame High School in Belmont and Mercy High School in Burlingame as a part of the tri-school performing arts program. Primary duties include directing both instrumental and choral ensembles as well as other classroom teaching duties as needed by the music program. The successful candidate is expected to engage and promote the musical arts at Junipero Serra High School and the community. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, participation in academic advising and maintaining regular office hours. It is expected that all instructors participate in committee work, the continuous improvement of the music program, and student recruitment and retention activities.
Requirements / Qualifications
Education/Qualifications Bachelor's degree (Master’s degree preferred) in music from an accredited institution with emphasis in either instrumental (concert band, jazz or both) or vocal education or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience Broad knowledge of traditional and contemporary instrumental (symphonic band and jazz) and choral repertoire. Experience in contemporary a Cappella also preferred Evidence of activity as a performer and conductor. Experience in arranging and/or composition preferred Basic piano keyboard skills Basic proficiency with computer notation and assessment programs, e.g. Finale, Smart Music Strong understanding of music theory and western music history and literature
