CERTIFICATED JOB DESCRIPTION
SCHOOL NURSE
Overall Responsibilities
	Conduct a health service program at one or more schools for the
	evaluation, improvement, and protection of the health of pupils and 
	school personnel in accordance with state laws and district policies
	and procedures.
Specific Responsibilities
	1.	Support the development and implementation of health-related
		curriculum to meet pupil health needs.
	2.	Participate cooperatively with the Coordinator of Health 
		Services, Director of Special Services, and with the school site
		principal or their designees in setting realistic objectives and
		periodically reevaluate objectives as to their value for each
		existing school population.
	3.	Plan with the school site principal for screening procedures
		such as:  hearing, vision, scoliosis, and dental inspections.
	4.	Attend faculty and parent meetings as appropriate.
	5.	Conduct medical case findings, screening, and referral activities
		related to health conditions of pupils.
	6.	Refer parents of pupils needing medical care or social services
		to appropriate private or community resources.
	7.	Provide health counseling and nursing care services for pupils, 
		parents, and school personnel.
	8.	Record and maintain a health and immunization record for each
		pupil at assigned school sites.
	9.	Render first aid, provide emergency nursing service for ill or 
		injured pupils at school, and administer medications.
	10.	Notify parents of pupil’s illness, injury, and potential health 
		problems and provide health counseling directed toward pursuit
		of appropriate action.
	11.	Supervise assigned clerk aide and health aide.
	12.	Conduct appropriate screenings to assist with special services 
		eligibility.
	13.	Serve on the Individualized Education Program (IEP) committee, Student 			Study Team (SST), and other appropriated committees.
	14.	Prepare, provide, and maintain first aid kits for playgrounds, 
		classrooms, and field trips.
	15.	Provide CPR, first aid, blood bone pathogens, and emergency response 			instruction, and other services to school staff members.

	16.	Prepare and distribute health topic bulletins to pupils, staff 
		members, and parents.
	17.	Prepare reports on Immunization Assessment of kindergarten
		students, CHDP, Hearing, and Scoliosis in an accurate and 
		timely manner.
	18.	Contribute significant medical and other data to school nurses,
		principals, counselors, special education staff, and other
		appropriate school personnel.
	19.	Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
	Specific knowledge of:
	1.	Health service programs appropriate to youth.
	2.	Federal and state laws, district policies and regulations, and
		information included in the district hand book for school nurses.
	Specific Ability to:
	1.	Contribute to the successful fulfillment of the District Mission.
	2.	Work cooperatively with others.
	3.	Conduct responsibilities of the position based on information 
		and instructions provided in English.
	4.	Learn and appropriately apply district policies and procedures
		and other regulations related to the position.
	5.	Maintain appropriate confidentiality about the status of 
		students and school activities.
	6.	Operate a calculator, computer, and data entry terminal.
	7.	Learn and apply current technology to assigned duties.
	Education:
	1.	Nursing Degree.
	Experience:
	1.	One year providing health care to school age population.
	License:
	1.	California Health Service School Nurse Credential.
	2.	California Audiometist Certificate.
	3.	Public Health Nursing Certificate.
	4.	Registered Nurse License.
	5.	Valid California Driver’s License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS IN THE WORK ENVIRONMENT
	These physical characteristics are representative of those that must
	be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential 
	functions of this job safely.
	1.	Mobility sufficient to move about, stand, and/or sit for 
		extended periods, and access all locations in the work
		environment.
	2.	Manual skill to appropriately control and manipulate
		objects, tools, materials, and equipment used on the job, 
		including a telephone and a computer.
	3.	Flexibility and strength to reach with hands and arms, bend
		and stoop.
	4.	Ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels, 
		and to hear and understand speech on the telephone.
	5.	Ability to speak in audible tones so that others may understand
		clearly in normal conversations and on the telephone.
	6.	Ability to see, read, and distinguish colors, with or without
		vision aids: computer screen, equipment used in the
		work environment, instructional materials, training
		materials, directions, rules, policies, calendars,
		agendas, manuals, and other printed matter.
	7.	Physical strength and agility to push, pull, twist, turn, squat, lift, and carry 			bulky objects of up to 25 pounds with or without assistance.
	8.	Mental acuity to perform the essential functions of this position
		in a safe, accurate, neat, and timely fashion and to make and 
		evaluate the results of judgments and decisions.
	9.	Ability to drive all district vehicles.
	10.	High tolerance for continuing, stressful situations.

	moderate noise level that is occasionally very noisy, frequent
	interruptions, and frequent movement from inside to outside with
