Job Summary
Santa Barbara Middle School is accepting applications for a full-time counselor and life skills teaching position for the 2021-2022 school year. Successful candidates should demonstrate the ability to foster and maintain relationships that support the emotional health of SBMS and be able to work well with the administrative team, students, parents and faculty. Additionally, we seek a candidate who is passionate about working with young people. Candidates should support the mission of SBMS and be eager to join a community where collaboration is valued and where openness to growth is the norm. Candidates should model a growth mindset, maintain a sense of humor, and demonstrate a warm personality. This position will also take part in teaching electives and will actively participate in our outdoor education program. This includes, and is not limited to, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, and camping. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Provide social-emotional counseling and learning/education support to students. Serve as a first point of contact and manage documentation for child protection concerns. Serve as the school liaison to community mental health providers. Collaborate with Curriculum committee, Learning Specialist and Dean of Students to develop and teach life skills - organization, planning, time management, problem solving skills, sex education, nutrition/body image, substance abuse, digital citizenship, relationships, mental and emotional wellness and more. Support student leaders, serving as peer advisors, in the development and implementation of student-led health programming. Support faculty training on topics determined by the administrative team and support the work of faculty and staff in guiding student development. Work with parents to support the efforts of the faculty and staff. Lead or assist with afternoon electives, Friday electives or sports.
