SPEECH / LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST GENERAL SUMMARY Under the general supervision and direction of the Alternative/Special Education Principal, provides speech and language services to students with speech, language, and hearing disabilities. Provides special training to students having any communication disorders in accordance with Merced County Special Education Plan Area (SELPA) policies. Performs other duties directly related to this job description. The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Implements specific strategies to assist identified students in the remediation of speech/language/hearing disorders. Screens and/or evaluates all children prior to case load selection and provides written diagnosis of each child in need of speech and/or language services. In cooperation with the immediate supervisor and the teachers, assists in developing a program of speech and/or language development. Keeps and maintains records as required by SELPA and district policies. May serve on the Individualized Educational Program (I.E.P.)Team and Student Study Team as required. Maintains professional competence through participation in inservice educational activities provided by the SELPA and Districts and participates in other self-directed professional growth activities. Communicates with parents and/or guardians relative to the individual needs of the students. Visits the homes of the students if necessary, to ensure that the necessary legal forms and reports are properly completed. Develops written instructional plan for students with the assistance of other I.E.P. Team members. Supervises all assigned students in a manner that creates a love of learning, develops students’ knowledge of subject matter and its relation to the world, and develops students’ critical thinking and other basic skills. Provides planned learning activities to engage students in a variety of activities involving all learning modalities and are brain compatible. Works in a responsible and collegial manner to achieve quality education for all students. Assumes responsibility for the quality and extent of learning of all students. Maintains documented files on all activities pertaining to students and records of formalized conferences with teachers and parents. Provides speech-language services with district personnel in all supplemental funded programs as directed or required. Recommends and provides follow up monitoring students for Individualized Education Plans. Serves as consultant to classes for students with special needs. Advises school personnel regarding the need for further mental health counseling for students. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED Ability to see and read, with or without vision aids; ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels; ability to communicate so others will clearly understand normal conversation. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Ability to prioritize and appropriately schedule work load or tasks to meet established deadlines. Ability to keep records and prepare verbal and written reports. WORKING CONDITIONS Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office equipment including a typewriter or computer terminal to type letters, reports and other materials; standing and walking to circulate for extended periods of time; bending, reaching to maintain files; hearing to answer telephone; speaking to exchange information, and sitting and operating a keyboard to enter data into a computer terminal for extended periods of time. Low to moderate stress level. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Mostly indoor office environment, school setting. Temperature – normal climate. CONTACTS Daily contact with students, parents, teachers, and District staff. Occasional contact with outside agencies. OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATES/LICENSES Valid California driver’s license. Valid California credential authorizing service as a speech/language and hearing specialist (Clinical/Rehabilitative Services.) EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Master’s degree in Communicative Disorders. Dexterity and physical condition to maintain a rigorous work schedule and meet standards of physical and mental health. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each principal duty satisfactorily.
