SAN DIEGO CITY SCHOOLS POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: Landscape Technician I REPORTS TO: Landscape Operations Program Supervisor DEPARTMENT: Maintenance and Operations CLASSIFICATION: Classified FLSA: Non-Exempt SALARY GRADE: 024 OSS REVISED: September 17, 2001 BASIC FUNCTION: Care for lawns, shrubbery, and trees; perform other unskilled or semiskilled grounds maintenance duties. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principal job elements.) E = Essential Functions Plant, mow, rake, edge, weed, water, and fertilize lawns. E Plant, fertilize, water, trim, and prune shrubs, trees, and flowers. E Use mower, shovel, pick, and other hand and power tools. E Cultivate and prepare grounds for planting; move trees, shrubs, and flowers. E Weed and spray planted areas. E Service and make minor repairs to power mowers, edgers, and other equipment. E Sweep sidewalks and other areas. E Perform related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must be at least 18 years of age. May be required to possess a valid California driver’s license, depending upon assignment. ABILITY TO: Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS A Landscape Technician I is distinguished from the next higher class of Landscape Technician II in that assignments are well-defined; landscape maintenance duties range from unskilled to semiskilled, and there is no responsibility for leading or directing the work of others. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Outdoor environment; exposure to dust, chemicals, variances in temperature, and equipment with moving parts. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Occasional lifting, carrying, and maneuvering heavy objects; occasional standing, squatting, climbing, kneeling, twisting, simple grasping; frequent to constant walking, including walking on gravel or uneven surfaces; bending at the neck or waist; stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling. NOTE: An incumbent in the job class of Landscape Technician I may be promoted to the next higher job class of Landscape Technician II upon certification by the Landscape Operations Program Supervisor and approval by the Maintenance and Operations Director that the incumbent meets the minimum qualifications listed on the current class description of the higher job class and is regularly performing a majority of the higher level duties. The number of work days allowed per fiscal year (July 1st-June 30th) is 195. The work is often strenuous and continuous and you should expect to be working in all kinds of weather. The substitute landscape technician must be available to work up to 40 hours per week, and be available between the hours of 6 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. every workday to receive your assignments. In order to work as a substitute landscape technician, you must have reliable transportation.

When there is a substitute Landscape opening, the most qualified applicants will be contacted for an interview. Contact our office only if there is a change in any information on your application. Your application will remain in our active files for consideration of employment for twelve months. You may reapply after twelve months by submitting another application. Hiring procedures: You will be required to complete a Conviction Report Form by the Human Resource Services Department when you are processed for employment. This review by the DOJ takes several days to several weeks. Unacceptable convictions will disqualify you from employment with the San Diego Unified School District, including misdemeanor or felony convictions related to sex or drug offenses. In accordance with the Education Code (Section 45125), you are required to have a current tuberculin skin test and be fingerprinted. The fee for fingerprinting is approx. $84 and needs to be paid when you go for fingerprinting.
