POSITION DESCRIPTION
HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
I. QUALIFICATIONS
A. Credential: Any Administrative Services Credential authorizing service at the grade level indicated.
B. Master of Arts (M.A.) Degree or Master of Science (M.S.) Degree.
C. Provide evidence of adequate preparation, background, or experience for the position.
II. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
A. Appointment and Term
The High School Principal shall be appointed by the Board of Education for a term of one year, upon nomination and recommendation by the Superintendent.
B. Remuneration
Remuneration for administrative personnel shall be determined by the official salary schedule as adopted by the Board of Education.
C. Work Year
The work year shall be 219 days and will include the teachers’ regular work year.
D. Administrative Relationship
The High School Principal shall be responsible to the Superintendent through the Administrative Director of Secondary Education.
III. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
A. Educational Leadership
1. Provides leadership for the development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of the curriculum and educational program within the bounds of the educational goals of the Board of Education and state law.
2. Encourages the professional growth of staff through their participation in conferences, in-service training, and professional courses at college or university level.
B. Effective Communications
1. Encourages a public and community relationship through the use of the media, parent-community participation programs, curricular, and extracurricular events.
2. Conducts staff meetings and such other staff conferences as are necessary for the efficient functioning of the total school program.
3. Administers a program of pupil counseling designed to meet the needs of all students, including articulation with the middle schools, colleges, and with vocational schools.
4. Interprets and implements directives from the central office and the Superintendent’s Office. Keeps the district administration apprised of school activities, programs, and concerns.
C. Management Abilities
1. Develops and implements school rules and procedures in accordance with the state law, the California Education Code, and the policies and regulations of the school district.
2. Demonstrates knowledge and personal initiative in making decisions on matters that reside within the local school jurisdiction.
3. Manages a budget that reflects the needs of the local school and is consistent with the education goals of the Board of Education.
4. Organizes and administers the local school in accordance with the policies of the Board of Education and the Administrative Regulations.
5. Exercises professional judgment in resolving emergencies at the local school.
6. Effectively supervises and evaluates staff so as to encourage professional growth, improve the quality of the learning situation, and ensure the academic success of all students.
7. Organizes and supervises, in cooperation with appropriate department heads, the activities of certificated and classified staff so as to ensure the coordination of auxiliary services involving library services, health services, food services, special education services, Title I/school improvement services, Economic Impact Aid services, child development services, testing services, attendance and welfare services, transportation services, custodial services, business services, and maintenance services.
8. Utilizes time to ensure the efficient functioning of the total school program.
9. Plans for the equitable and economical use of the school physical facilities, including maintenance repairs. Arranges for the storage and distribution of supplies and other instructional materials.
10. Identifies administrative and/or academic problems and demonstrates imagination and creativity in generating solutions for such problems.
11. Directs planning for a program of extracurricular activities.
12. Supervises, evaluates, and coordinates the activities of personnel directly concerned with the instructional program in the school.
13. Works cooperatively with the Director of Certificated Personnel in the selection and assignment of properly certificated staff. Provides for the continuous evaluation of certificated personnel under his/her supervision.
14. Maintains and ethical and considerate relationship with certificated and classified personnel.
15. Works cooperatively with the Director of Classified personnel in the selection, assignment, and evaluation of classified personnel.
16. Maintains an accurate pupil attendance accounting system and provides for the issuance of work permits.
17. Certifies the completion of graduation requirements by students of the school. Directs and participates in graduation activities and exercise.
D. Professional and Personal Development
1. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the scope of the responsibilities of the position of High School Principal as these responsibilities relate to students, staff, parents-community, central services, and regulations and policies of the Board of Education.
2. Seeks professional growth through reading, participation in conferences, in-service training, and professional courses at the college or university level.
3. Seeks assistance when necessary and demonstrates a willingness to work cooperatively with Area Administrator, central services, and professional peers.
E. Secondary (Adjunct) Duties and Responsibilities
1. Serves as the school’s representative to the athletic league’s board of directors.
2. Serves as a member of High School Task Force.
3. Serves as chairman of the school’s Administrative Council.
4. Performs other tasks as assigned by the Superintendent or the Superintendent’s designee.
