Job Summary

BASIC FUNCTION Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform journey-level electric and gas welding in the maintenance, repair and construction of District equipment and facilities.

Requirements / Qualifications

EDUCATION: Graduation from high school. EXPERIENCE: Completion of an approved welding apprenticeship program or two years journey-level welding experience. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid, appropriate California driver's license at time of appointment, and throughout employment in a position in this classification. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES KNOWLEDGE OF: Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in MIG, TIG, and acetylene welding. Working properties of metals. Technical aspects of the field of specialty. Health and safety regulations.

ABILITY TO: Operate MIG, TIG and acetylene welding equipment. Operate grinders and other shop tools related to welding and fabrication. Read and interpret plans, blueprints and specifications. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Observe health and safety regulations. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Climbing ladders. Standing for extended periods of time. Lifting and carrying heavy objects weighing 50 pounds or more. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. Seeing to perform welding duties. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate welding tools and equipment. WORK ENVIRONMENT Indoor and outdoor work environment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Noise from equipment operation. Regular exposure to fumes, dust, and odors. HAZARDS Working around and with machinery having moving parts. Working at heights. Sparks, hot ashes, and hot metals from welding and fabrication.

GENERAL ESSENTIAL DUTIES Repair, modify and fabricate various types of metal, parts and equipment by use of MIG, TIG and acetylene welding processes. E Perform brazing, hard facing, cutting and welding of various school structures, fences, machinery, playground and automotive equipment, school and office furniture and other metal items. E Lay out, mark and weld pipes, fittings and metal fixtures for District facilities, equipment and furniture; design and work from sketches or drawings. E Create mechanical and pattern drawings for replacements parts and new designs for existing equipment. E Form and fabricate metal parts to meet special purpose needs; design modifications for maintenance, grounds, transportation, food service and other related equipment. E Install pipes, playground and bleachers equipment and fences; make playground equipment. E Operate drills, grinders and impact wrenches in the performance of welding work. E Operate a variety of maintenance and construction tools and equipment; drive a vehicle to assigned sites to conduct work; respond to emergency and non-emergency calls as needed. E Work from verbal and written instructions, blueprints, sketches and workorders. E Responsible for assigned vehicle and shop; order and stock an adequate supply of parts and materials. E Perform related duties as assigned.
