JOB SPECIFICATION

 

MAINTENANCE WORKER II - UTILITY

 

THE POSITION

Under general supervision, performs gardening, irrigation and maintenance work on District grounds, lawns and landscaped areas; and upkeep of District buildings and equipment.

 

RESPONSIBLE TO:            Director of Maintenance and Operations

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Incumbents in this class are assigned a variety of duties which require a working knowledge of gardening, irrigation and maintenance.  Incumbents are expected to perform a wide variety of tasks with only occasional instruction or assistance. 

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:

  • Irrigate and cultivate trees, shrubs, turf and ground cover.
  • Mow, edge, water, trim and fertilize all grass areas and keep grounds in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Plant, water, trim, fertilize, weed and cultivate trees, plants, shrubs, lawns and flowers.
  • Assist in the installation, maintenance and repair of sprinkler systems.
  • Prepare athletic fields.
  • Clean and maintain rain gutters and drains.
  • Maintain, clean and assist in the repair of parking and blacktop areas.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in proper operating condition and perform minor repair of grounds tools and equipment.
  • Operate equipment including power lawn mowers, edgers, sprayers, tractors, rototillers, air compressors, cement and carpentry tools and related equipment.
  • Perform routine pest control duties; sets up rodent traps.
  • When not engaged in groundswork activities, may assist as required in a variety of maintenance work throughout the District.
  • Perform and/or assist in maintenance installation and repair to buildings and equipment in connection with all areas of maintenance, grounds, and custodial including the construction, mechanical, and electrical trades.
  • Make routine and emergency repairs and adjustments to buildings, furniture, equipment and facilities such as, but not limited to roofs, locks, plumbing, walls, flooring, glass, cement, asphalt, and doors.
  • Use power and hand tools to do tasks.
  • Lift, stack, and move heavy furniture, equipment, and materials.
  • Perform routine safety checks and maintain fluid levels in District vehicles.
  • Drive District trucks and other vehicles as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE 

Knowledge of:

  • Speak, read and write English at a level required for satisfactory job performance.  Basic math.
  • Basic methods, materials, tools and equipment used in grounds maintenance, irrigation, gardening work, and building maintenance work.
  • Basic knowledge of construction, plumbing, electricity, air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and general equipment repair.
  • General safety procedures related to grounds maintenance.
  • Hazmat and safety regulations.

 

Ability to:

  • Work without immediate supervision and learn new skills.
  • Maintain work schedules in performing tasks.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform repairs with a minimum of supervision/assistance.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions including simple blueprints and plans.
  • Maintain work pace appropriate to given workload.
  • Operate a variety of grounds equipment, power tools, and power equipment.
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Maintain records as required.
  • Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain a pleasant appearance and demeanor.

 

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment:

  • ·         Outside environment, subject to adverse weather conditions.
  • ·         Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
  • ·         Subject to noise from equipment and tools.
  • ·         Regular exposure to heat, cold, dust, odors, chemicals, pollen and dirt.
  • ·         Ability to work around plants, shrubs and ground covers.

 

Physical Abilities:

  • ·         Good physical condition and possess physical strength and stamina to do strenuous work
  • ·         Heavy work involving lifting, carrying (up to 50 pounds), pushing and/or pulling of objects (up to 100 pounds).
  • ·         Standing for extended periods of time.
  • ·         Physical dexterity in limbs and finger digits to operate equipment and to perform strenuous manual labor.
  • ·         Bending, grasping, stooping, kneeling and digging.
  • ·         Walking over rough, uneven surfaces.
  • ·         Climbing ladders to trim trees.
  • ·         Reaching above shoulders.

 

Hazards:

  • ·         Working with machinery having moving parts.
  • ·         Exposure to pollen, chemicals, pesticides and herbicides, gasoline and motor oil.
  • ·         May involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, lifts and ramps.
  • ·         Standing and walking for extended periods of time.

 

LICENSES

Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
