CLASS TITLE: MAINTENANCE PLUMBER
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Area Supervisor-Maintenance, perform journey-level maintenance work in the repair, inspection, service, installation and alternation of gas, water and sewer plumbing fixtures and systems.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Perform journey-level maintenance work in the repair, inspection, service, installation and alteration of gas, water and sewer plumbing fixtures and systems; work from blueprints and sketches; prepare job estimates as assigned; coordinate plumbing activities with local service agencies.
Install, service, maintain, regulate, repair and replace plumbing lines, fixtures, fittings and equipment.
Install, repair and replace water heaters, water tanks, sinks, faucets, toilets, garbage disposals, urinals, drinking fountains, showers and other fixtures.
Install, repair and test hot water, tap water plumbing systems, diagnose malfunctions and determine repair needs; insulate pipelines for freeze or hot water applications.
Utilize snake camera to survey pipes, walls and systems under flooring; repair, remove and replace sewer lines and laterals, gas regulators and other equipment and systems.
Perform preventive maintenance tasks, such as cleaning sewers and flushing lines; make recommendations for modification of new installations.
Unclog drains and rain gutters; repair gas lines; color code in-ground plumbing boxes according to established procedures.
Operate a variety of inspection and specialized repair equipment including power roto-rooters, power snakes, hydro-blaster, concrete and asphalt cutting equipment and a variety of power and hand tools; operate a District vehicle to conduct work; install and replace in-ground concrete boxes.
Maintain service, repair and other records as required; order parts for assigned projects; respond to emergency situations.
Inspect the flow and drain on drinking fountains at District facilities on a rotating basis.
Respond to 24 hour emergency call as assigned.
Assist other maintenance staff with projects as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned.
DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Principles, methods, equipment, tools and materials of journey-level plumbing work.
Applicable mechanical, electrical, plumbing and safety codes and regulations.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Soldering and brazing techniques.
Hazmat and safety regulations.
Proper lifting techniques.

ABILITY TO:
Perform journey-level work in the repair, inspection, servicing, installation and alteration of plumbing and irrigation systems and related equipment.

Operate equipment such as power roto-rooters, power snakes and a variety of power and hand tools.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by completion of an approved plumbing apprenticeship program and five years of journey-level plumbing experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California Class C driver's license.
Incumbents must obtain certification to wear a respirator within probationary period.
Floor-lift 90 pounds and arm-lift 90 pounds.
