Requirements / Qualifications

The Low Incidence Department is currently looking to hire Special Education Signing Assistants to provide assistance to the instructional program in school classrooms, resource specialist rooms, halls, and on playgrounds, or in licensed children's institutions, home, and hospital education programs, and independent study programs. This recruitment will establish an Eligibility List for the current vacancies as well as any future vacancies. This recruitment will establish an Eligibility List for ALL District Locations. Successful candidates will be offered the opportunity to Substitute in this classification. Positions in this classification typically work 10 months of the year. Set schedules for positions in this classification can vary between 15 to 32.5 hrs per week. Positions greater than 20 hours per week qualify for district-paid health and wellness benefits for the employee and their eligible dependents. The Special Education Signing Assistant will be paid on the Paraeducator Salary Schedule. Salary Grade: PARA 020. Please note: some positions work part-time, 10 months per year. Part-time positions may not be eligible for benefits.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma/GED and a passing score on the San Diego City Schools Classroom Assistant Proficiency Exam (CAPE) or an Associate’s Degree (or higher) or 48 or more eligible units of coursework at a recognized college or university. LICENSING AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Personal appearance, grooming, and language which will provide a satisfactory example to pupils.

Candidates must attach a copy of a U.S. High School Diploma, U.S. High School Transcript, GED, or Foreign Equivalency Certificate to the online application to be invited to the exam. Due to ongoing social distancing requirements, at this time the CAPE Exam will be conducted remotely utilizing an online testing platform. Access to the internet and the use of a camera-ready desktop/laptop with a microphone are required to participate in these processes. Eligible List and Substitute Pool: Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and requirements of the position will be placed on an Eligible List for a period of 12 months. The Eligible List will be used to fill vacancies at various sites. Additionally, qualified candidates will be invited to be processed for placement on the Substitute Pool for this position.
