SANTA ANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT ATTENDANCE TECHNICIAN BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an Assistant Principal or an Office Manager, provide accurate accounting of student enrollment and attendance at a high school or intermediate school in accordance with provisions of the California Education Code; communicate with staff, students and parents concerning student attendance; operate an automated attendance record system. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Account for daily attendance of all enrolled students by making and receiving calls or notes of student absence from parents, verify absences by processing notes each day. E Process and verify student absence information from parents and teachers and issue excuses to students to be absent from classes. E Assist parents in person or by phone regarding student absences. E Assist in registering new students; receive and check forms for accuracy; record names, addresses, and other identifying material of students entering and dropping in a student directory; enter data into CRT involving adds, drops, codes, absences, and verifications. E Assist teachers with student attendance problems and provide teachers with necessary information and forms; prepare and type excuse lists and distribute to teachers. E Maintain lists of specially classified students. E Work directly with counselors and assistant principals on truancy problems; refer persistent attendance problems to superiors for review and action. E Respond to questions and inquiries from students, teachers, and parents regarding attendance policies and practices. E Prepare and distribute attendance reports on a periodic basis as required by District policy; analyze reports for superiors, identifying attendance issues and problems. E Order supplies and maintain office equipment in good working order. E Train and supervise clerical assistants and student assistants. Provide secretarial assistance and maintain files and appointment calendars for administrators; assist students, staff and visitors at counter as necessary. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Modern office practices, procedures and equipment, including the use of a computerized attendance system. Recordkeeping techniques. District policies with respect to attendance accounting. Oral and written communications skills. State Education Code sections applying to attendance record-keeping. ABILITY TO: Make simple arithmetic calculations. Operate a computer terminal, Scranton machine and other modern office equipment. Organize and meet deadlines with little supervision. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Work cooperatively with others. Keyboard accurately and appropriately. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Meet schedules and time lines. Train and supervise personnel. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Perform the essential functions of the job. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school including or supplemented by courses in typing, recordkeeping and office procedures involving the use of computers and three years' responsible clerical experience involving recordkeeping, preferably one year of which includes a school setting. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: High school or intermediate office environment. Constant interruptions. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Hearing and speaking accurately to exchange information in person or on the telephone. Seeing to read a variety of materials. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard. Sitting for extended periods of time. Lifting or moving objects, normally not exceeding twenty (20) pounds.
