JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The Applied Behavioral Sciences division at Cuesta College is seeking a Full-Time Tenure Track Nutrition/Culinary Arts Instructor. While the candidate's primary responsibility will be teaching sections in the Nutrition and Culinary Arts Departments in both Fall and Spring semesters, the candidate will also have additional college and division responsibilities, outlined below.

INSTRUCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Effective teaching begins with good preparation. Faculty are responsible for choosing appropriate course materials, including resources at low or no cost to students, developing a student-centered equity-minded syllabus, one that adheres to the college-approved Course Outline of Record, outlines classroom expectations, and content to be covered; as well as creating a plan for content delivery, determining the best way to assess student learning, and assigning grades. It also includes respectful instructor-student communication, availability during office hours, and identifying and connecting students with college services and resources.

 

Subject Matter Preparation

Preference will be given to candidates who:

 

• Have recent successful lecture and lab experience teaching college-level Nutrition and Culinary Arts courses, such as Nutrition, Cultural Aspects of Food, Principles of Food, Plant-based Nutrition, Introduction to Nutrition for Health Professionals, Food Safety and Sanitation, Plant-based Cuisine, Cuisines of the World, Culinary Arts Fundamentals, Culinary Gardening, Culinary: Weights, Measures, and Calculations, and Baking and Baking Science;

• Have professional work experience in the field of Nutrition and Culinary Arts.

 

Evidence of Outstanding Ability as a Teacher

Appropriate evidence includes, but is not limited to, experience, training, or achievement that the candidate has:

 

• Commitment to staying up-to-date with the latest developments in Nutrition and Culinary Arts and in collaborating with industry and/or professional organizations on curriculum and partnership development;

• The ability to continuously reflect on, evaluate, and improve teaching methods;

• The ability to organize and explain materials/instructions in ways appropriate to students' abilities and learning styles;

• The ability to use teaching methods that engage students actively in their own learning, promote development of critical thinking skills, and encourage students to become lifelong learners;

• The ability to use instructional methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity;

• The ability to motivate students from a broad spectrum of cultural, academic, socioeconomic, and language backgrounds;

• The ability to develop student learning outcomes and methods for assessing students' achievement of those outcomes;

• The enthusiasm for, understanding of, and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college;

• Familiarity with and willingness to expand the use of technology in Nutrition and Culinary Arts, including online instruction;

• A commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college.

 

COLLEGE AND DEPARTMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES

College and/or departmental responsibilities include the following activities:

 

• Achieving and maintaining Cuesta College Distance Education certification;

• Leading the Culinary Arts Department (i.e. scheduling, budgeting, equipment ordering);

• Developing and updating courses and course/program curriculum;

• Serving on college committees and taskforces (Participatory Governance);

• Researching and writing program review;

• Serving on peer evaluation and hiring committees;

• Course scheduling;

• Working collaboratively with full-time and part-time instructors in the department;

• Collaborating with community about curriculum changes, job opportunities, or scholarship opportunities for students;

• Maintaining collegial, professional, and ethical conduct;

• Organizing and leading annual advisory meetings;

• Coordinating/collaborating culinary partnerships, events, grants, equipment and commercial kitchen facilities;

• Serving and/or coordinating the North County Campus, SLO Campus, South County Center, Dual Enrollment, and California Men's Colony State Prison sites;

• Regularly submitting assessment results into the college outcomes and assessments database.

 

Selected applicants will be asked to interview for a full-time tenure track position as a Nutrition/Culinary Arts instructor in the Applied Behavioral Sciences Division on Wednesday, April 14 or Friday, April 16, 2021. Second interviews will be held on Wednesday, April 21, 2021. The selected applicant will begin their full-time teaching assignment in the 2021-2022 school year which begins on August 10, 2021. Assignments will be day, evening, and online classes at the San Luis Obispo Campus, North County Campus in Paso Robles, South County Center in Arroyo Grande, or other sites within San Luis Obispo County.

Essential Functions & Qualifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

-Master's in nutrition, dietetics, or dietetics and food administration from an accredited institution;AND-Two years of professional experience in a culinary field.OR -Bachelor's in nutrition, dietetics, or dietetics and food administration from an accredited institution*;AND -Master's in chemistry, public health or family and consumer studies/home economics from an accredited institution; AND-Two years of professional experience in a culinary field.OR

-The equivalent (candidates making application on the basis of equivalency must submit all materials requested for an equivalency judgment, indicated on the Equivalency Process link listed in Additional Information).

OR

-A valid Community College credential in the discipline.

 

(*NOTE: A bachelor's in nutrition, dietetics, or dietetics and food administration, and certification as a registered dietitian, is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

 

Additional Requirement:

-Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

• Teaching experience in the discipline, community college level preferred;

• Awareness of the philosophy and objectives of California Community Colleges;

• Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately-impacted students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes;

• Willingness to examine and remediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students;

• Experience and skill with addressing inequity in the classroom and on campus;

• Experience and expertise in culturally-responsive teaching in the nutrition and culinary arts settings;

• Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within nutrition and culinary arts courses and topics;

• Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving Institution designation for institutional, departmental and instructional practices.
