Custodian- Job Description, La Mesa-Spring Valley School District Purpose Statement: The job of Custodian was established for the purpose/s of maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility for students, staff and public; communicating information in response to inquires; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities; and maintaining facilities to minimize facility deterioration and damage. Essential Functions - Arranges furnishings and equipment (e.g., desks, chairs, podiums, bleachers, audiovisual equipment) for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and special events. - Assists in opening and securing facility (e.g., opening/locking gates, raising/lowering flags, unlocking/locking doors and windows, setting/releasing alarms, on/off lighting) for the purpose of ensuring facilities are maintained to meet daily operational requirements; secured to minimize property damage and equipment loss; and prevent vandalism. - Cleans carpeting when assigned to Carpet Crew for the purpose of maintaining carpets in a sanitary condition and maximizing the durability of the carpeting over time. - Cleans facilities that may require a combination of sweeping, scrubbing, polishing, moping, dusting, vacuuming and/or scraping tasks dependent on the need within assigned areas (e.g., cafeteria, classrooms, offices, restrooms, sidewalks, grounds, parking lots, drinking fountains, waste receptacles) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment required for daily operations. - Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g., cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops) for the purpose of ensuring the required items are available as needed to perform cleaning functions. - Monitors work areas and other site areas (e.g., halls, multipurpose rooms, lunch room, restrooms, grounds) for the purpose of identifying needs to maintain site according to established standards, evaluating situations and taking immediate action and/or referring to other appropriate staff members; and ensuring the safety of students, other staff and visitors. - Performs custodial maintenance activities during scheduled breaks and summers (e.g., strip/wax floors, relocation of furniture, painting, major window/blind cleaning) for the purpose of performing activities during periods of least disruption to educational environment and/or in preparation of school openings. - Performs minor installation, maintenance and/or repair activities of equipment, furniture and fixtures (e.g., vacuum cleaner belts, light bulbs, clogged drains, soap dispensers, pencil sharpeners) for the purpose of ensuring proper functioning and usability of items or determining the need to report to appropriate administrative and/or maintenance personnel. - Replenishes classroom and rest room supplies (e.g., paper towels, soap) for the purpose of ensuring adequate quantities are available for daily use. - Responds to immediate safety, health and/or security concerns (e.g., injured parties, vandalism, graffiti, equipment breakage, furniture and fixture damage, unauthorized visitors, alarms, parking lot traffic, removal of pests and stray animals) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate issues including notification to appropriate administrative and maintenance personnel to maintain the educational programs without interruption. - Responds to students, teachers, other site personnel and visitors for the purpose of providing information and direction regarding activities, safety issues and/or maintenance of facilities and/or equipment. Other Functions: Attends scheduled unit meetings and in-service training (e.g., blood borne pathogens, cleaning procedures, use of solvents, floor care, new products) for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions. Delivers a variety of items (e.g., supplies, mail, packages, furniture) for the purpose of distributing materials to the appropriate parties and/or site locations in a timely manner. Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications. Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: SKILLS are required to perform single, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in industrial maintenance; and adhering to safety practices. KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: methods, materials, and equipment used in industrial cleaning; safety practices and procedures; and basic hand tools for making minor equipment repairs. ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; working effectively with others; working as part of a team; and depending on work assignment, working non-standard hours and traveling between assigned work sites may be required. Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the Organization’s services. Working Environment: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 70% walking, and 25% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and in hazardous conditions. Experience: Job related experience is desired. Education: Less than high school. Equivalency: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to six months of performing custodial functions.
