GROUNDS MAINTENANCE WORKER II


BASIC FUNCTION

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, skillfully operate a variety of heavy duty grounds maintenance equipment; perform complex grounds maintenance and gardening functions and activities.


REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Operate a variety of power grounds equipment including large gang mowers, tractors, backhoe equipment and sweepersE; perform a variety of specialized functions using a variety of tractor attachmentsE; drive a truck with a trailer attachment in transporting heavy duty grounds maintenance equipment from work site to work site as requiredE; service grounds maintenance equipment and make minor adjustments and repairs, and perform a variety of preventive maintenance functionsE; mow large fields and sweep large areas of asphalt and concreteE; dig trenches for new gas lines, water mains and electrical lines, and backfill the trenches as the various lines are laidE; fill, level, smooth and prepare areas for sidewalks, approaches and slabsE; prepare landscaped areas for the planting of lawns and a variety of plants, shrubs and treesE; trim, shape, and care for treesE; mix and pour concrete and paving materialE; mow, edge, trim and prune landscaped areasE; prepare and fertilize soil, plants, lawns, trees, shrubs, hedges, flowers and a variety of other plantsE; hoe, weed and rake lawnsE; water landscaped areas by hand or by operating a sprinkler systemE; load a light truck with trimmings and trash and drive it to a trash disposal area as requiredE; operate a variety of light grounds maintenance equipment, such as lawn mowers, edgers, lawn vacuums and sweepersE; assist in the preparation, lining and marking of athletic event areas; assist in the installation, maintenance and repair of sprinkling and irrigation systems as required; assist in reporting and preventing facility vandalism; smooth and level athletic fields and running tracks as required; spray for weeds and insect control as required; move furniture and equipment and perform other grounds maintenance functions as required; plan, organize and lay out assigned tasksE; estimate labor and material costsE; requisition and maintain an adequate inventory of supplies and materialsE; assist in the performance of building maintenance duties as required; perform related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Operation, use and maintenance of heavy duty grounds maintenance equipment;

Methods, procedures, materials and tools commonly utilized in grounds maintenance and gardening work;

Safe working methods and procedures.


Ability to:

Skillfully operate and maintain large grounds equipment and safely and skillfully use a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening tools;

Perform heavy manual work functions pertaining to grounds maintenance, equipment operation and gardening work;

Understand and follow oral and written directions;

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others;

Maintain simple records and prepare reports.



EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination equivalent to: Graduation from High School and two years of experience in the operation of large grounds equipment, tractors, trucks and large power mowers used in performing grounds maintenance and gardening work.


LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Possess and maintain a valid Class C drivers license, or valid Class C California drivers license, qualify and maintain a Class A drivers license within six (6) months of employment;

Insurability by the District's liability insurance carrier.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment:

Indoor/outdoor/adverse weather environments;

Driving a vehicle to conduct work.


Physical Abilities:

Heavy physical labor;

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate grounds vehicles and equipment;

Pushing or pulling;

Working around and with machinery having moving parts;
