Job Summary
Performs a vital role in the functioning of the classroom. Helps the children feel safe and secure through an attitude of warmth and love, combined with firmness (loving and gentle) in reinforcing the rules and limits that have been established. Attends to the needs of the children and anticipates disruptions before they happen. Protects the individual and small group lessons that the lead teacher is giving. Keeps a watchful eye on the whole classroom and keeps disruptions to a minimum so that the lead teacher can give uninterrupted lessons. Duties and Responsibilities: 1. The Assistant Teacher will take direction from their Lead Teacher, and follow that direction to the best of their ability. 2. Provides an instructional program utilizing the adopted HP curriculum for assigned students by teaching: Bible, Practical Life, Pre-language, Language, Mathematics, Science, Geography, Art as well as integrating with special area teachers. 3. Implements administrative regulations and procedures as defined in the school handbook. 4. Implements lesson plans and instructional materials, provided by lead teacher, to provide planned experiences in order to motivate students. Utilizes instructional time through the use of direct, individual, small group, and collaborative instruction. 5. Utilize the appropriate instructional techniques, activities, strategies, and supplemental materials that will adapt the curriculum to the needs of individual pupils and be consistent with the goals of Horizon Prep’s Early Education program. 6. Embraces the Montessori curriculum and take the necessary steps to grow in the understanding and knowledge of a Montessori philosophy and commit to teaching this curriculum in keeping with the goals of HP’s Early Education Program. 7. Assists Lead Teacher in evaluations and helps to maintain accurate records of academic and social growth of students.
Requirements / Qualifications
1. BS/BA degree is preferred, not required. 2. A minimum of 12 units in Child Development. Teachers are encouraged to participate in continuing education in the field of Child Development and are also encouraged to have on going professional development in areas of discipline, first aide, nutrition, Montessori education, special needs, etc. through staff meetings conferences, classes and workshops. 3. Successful completion of a student teaching experience or approved internship at an accredited college or university. 4. A valid teaching credential issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing or other approving authorizing states to service in the assigned area. 5. Successful completion of a student teaching experience or approved internship at an accredited college or university.
