DEFINITION

As part of a secondary teaching assignment, teaches one or more classes of JROTC to pupils in grades 9-12, assists in other school programs as assigned.  This position requires a commissioned or non-commissioned officer who possesses a valid designated subjects teaching credential in JROTC and who has been certified as a high school ROTC instructor by the branch of service they represent and through any of the JROTC Regional Headquarters.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Administers and manages the JROTC program effectively according to law, regulations, policies, and principles
  • Actively recruits students to join JRTOC
  • Achieves desired learning goals by teaching prescribed JROTC subjects listed in the Program of Instruction
  • Maintains proficiency in military subjects taught
  • Modifies and improves given instruction by remaining continuously alert to new and alternative instructional methods and motivational techniques
  • Complies with school district safety guidelines in all instances when instructing, supervising, monitoring, accompanying, or escorting cadets
  • Ensures facilities provided are adequate to support program
  • Prepares unit for formal inspection
  • Counsels cadets on their performance within the Corp of cadets
  • Conducts training at JROTC summer camps and other duties as prescribed by camp commander
  • Assists cadets in applying for Senior ROTC scholarships and service academy appointments
  • Sets the appropriate example in decorum and cooperativeness, positive attitude, and consistency for cadets and colleagues
  • Organizes, develops, and administers the JROTC program in assigned schools
  • Prepares and maintains administrative and support reference materials required to be available in the school
  • Maintains and accounts for all property issued to the school; ensures sensitive items of equipment are secured
  • Organizes, supervises, and develops extracurricular activities to include color guard, drill teams, rifle teams, orientation teams and special programs
  • Assists in the review, organization, and implementation of all technical data required to develop a military curriculum
  • Performs the duties of a classroom teacher (JROTC curriculum)

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies and maintains required inventory records; may request resource speakers and field trips
  • Communicates with parents and school counselor to discuss the individual pupil’s progress
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment and/or on a District level
  • Participates in intra-school planning and communications by working with the building administrators in the development of school policy, school needs, budget development, student affairs, and other areas related to the overall education programs, through serving on faculty council, etc., when elected or jointly chosen by staff and Principal
  • Other duties as assigned by the Principal

  • Valid Designated Subjects Credential
  • Valid English Learner Certification

Requirements / Qualifications

Must possess or qualify for a California Designated Subjects Special Subjects Teaching Credential in the area of Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). This is an Air Force Junior ROTC Program located at Sultana High School. Additional information on credentialing requirements may be found on the following website: www.ctc.ca.gov You may reference CL-699 which is the leaflet for this credential. It requires four years of experience or education (at least one year of the experience must be within the three-year period immediately preceding the issuance of the credential). For ROTC, the experience must be verified by the branch of the military service sponsoring the program in the employing school district.
