JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the County Office of Education/Special Ed. Administrator, the Educational Occupational Therapist provides an appropriate program for selected and eligible students with disabilities; assesses disabilities of referred students; makes recommendations regarding appropriate levels and types of service, goals and specific objectives for students; provides demonstrations of activities for the use of teachers in the classroom; and performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
1. Graduation from an accredited school of occupational therapy with a minimum of a bachelor's degree.
2. Current and valid license issued by the California Board of Occupational Therapy and valid registration issued by the National Board Certification of Occupational Therapy.
3. One year of successful experience in a school setting serving students with disabilities.
4. A valid California driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY
1. Knowledge of modern treatment procedures designed to maintain or improve a student's motor functions and to achieve greater independence in performing life skills.
2. Ability to assess individual needs, establish realistic and appropriate goals and objectives, and design and implement a program for each student.
3. Ability to provide demonstrations of exercises and activities for teachers and parents.
4. Ability to communicate orally and in writing sufficient to express ideas, thoughts and instructions clearly to special educators, community members, parents and administrators.
5. Ability to collaborate effectively with SLOCOE staff, parents, members of other agencies and the public.
6. Ability to plan and conduct a system of continuous evaluation of each student's progress.
7. Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
8. Ability to drive a car.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS of this position, which may change or evolve in the future are, but not limited to, the following:
1. Assess referred children's skills and abilities in developmental functions, orthopedic status, quality of movement and postural control, gross, fine and oral motor functioning and independence in activities of daily living.
2. Utilize treatment procedures individually designed to maintain or improve a student’s skills.
3. Assist in the development of students' IEPs.
4. Coordinate services with the California Children's Services and other agencies.
5. Provide consultative assistance to the classroom teacher and other SLOCOE staff.
6. Provide demonstrations of exercises and activities for classroom teachers and parents.
7. Handle confidential material with complete security.
8. Lift, move, position disabled persons up to age 22 who may weigh 150 pounds or more.
9. Drive a car.
For employees working in the Infant Development Program, serving students age birth – 3, the following Early Start Service Coordination Essential Functions also apply if designated as Service Coordinator on the IFSP:
1. Assist and enable an eligible child and the child’s family to receive the rights, procedural safeguards, and services that are authorized to be provided under California’s early intervention program.
2. Coordinate all services across agency lines.
3. Serve as point of contact in helping parents obtain the services and assistance needed.
4. Assist parents of eligible children in gaining access to early intervention services and other services and identified in the Individual Family Service Plans.
5. Coordinate the provision of early intervention services and other services (e.g. non-diagnostic medical services) as needed.
6. Facilitate timely delivery of available services.
7. Continue to seek appropriate services necessary to benefit the development of the child being serviced.
8. Coordinate the performance of evaluations and assessments.
9. Facilitate and participate in the development, review, and evaluation of Individual Family Service Plans.
10. Assist families in identifying available service providers.
11. Coordinate and monitor the delivery of available services.
12. Inform families of the availability of advocacy services.
13. Coordinate with medical and health providers.
14. Facilitate the development of a transition plan to preschool services if appropriate.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS of this position are, but not limited to, the following:
1. Facility to sit at a desk, conference table, on low chairs, on the floor, or in meeting rooms of various configurations for extended periods of time.
2. Facility to see and read, with or without vision aids, a computer screen and printed matter, and to distinguish colors.
3. Facility to hear and understand speech at normal room levels, on the telephone, and outdoors.
4. Facility to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal conversations, in training sessions, presentations, on the playground, in meetings, and on the telephone.
5. Manual dexterity to operate a telephone, and to perform tasks related to this position using both hands.
6. Facility to walk on uneven terrain, play yards and school grounds.
7. Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height; and to bend, to stoop, to sit on the floor, to climb stairs, to walk, and to reach overhead.
8. Physical capacity to lift (with assistance), move and position disabled persons up to age 22 who may weigh 150 pounds or more.
9. Facility to drive a car.
