Job Summary

The Conductor of the Concert Orchestra is responsible for the selection of the season repertoire and the development of the orchestra. In this regard, he or she will participate in the annual General Auditions to select the musicians for the group; conduct the weekly rehearsals and the three season concerts; manage and hold the orchestra’s annual Solo Competition; and work with the orchestra at the annual, weeklong summer overnight camp at Santa Clara University.

Requirements / Qualifications

Primary Responsibilities

  • Selects repertoire for full orchestra, appropriate for the musicianship level of the group, for the following season;
  • Judges auditions by student applicants during the General Auditions held annually every spring for the following season, for selection of musicians qualified to join the Concert Orchestra;
  • Attend and conduct the orchestra in weekly rehearsals held Monday nights in Los Gatos, as well the regular concerts held throughout the season (December, March & June);
  • Manage and participate as a judge in the orchestra’s annual Solo Competition, where winners are invited to perform as soloists with the orchestra in the following season;
  • Work with the orchestra at the annual, weeklong summer camp held at Santa Clara University, usually in late July, in daily rehearsals with an end-of-camp concert held on the last day of camp;
  • Work with the Music Director in finalizing repertoire, audition results, and details relating to the competition;
  • Support the organization to the best of his or her ability, by actively working to recruit members for the orchestra, participate in occasional staff meetings as needed, provide regular feedback regarding rehearsals and concerts, and providing any materials needed by administrative staff in preparation for the concerts.
  • Qualifications

  • Must be a musician (preferably strings or strong knowledge of strings) with a strong educational background in music;
  • A minimum of two years’ experience working with musical groups, preferably youth groups in an educational setting with conducting experience preferred;
  • An excellent and effective communicator, highly energetic, with established professional ties to the local community (San Jose and surrounding communities in Santa Clara County);
