Requirements / Qualifications
Constructed in 1937, C.K. McClatchy has earned an enviable reputation in the Sacramento community. Countless graduates over the years have entered the fields of law, medicine, politics, education, the arts and the world of industry after continuing their education in the universities and colleges of California as well as in notable colleges throughout the nation, such as Harvard, Yale, MIT, and Columbia. The academic programs at C.K. McClatchy are founded in the traditions of the school’s past with emphasis placed on developing the skills of writing, thinking and computing so that all students have access to a challenging and rigorous high school experience that develops well-rounded students. C.K. McClatchy is home to five Academies – Humanities and International Studies Program, AFJROTC, the Law & Public Policy Academy, the Criminal Justice Academy and the Visual and Performing Arts Academy. The latter two Academies are supported by the SCUSD system-wide redesign Linked Learning effort. C.K. McClatchy’s new principal will be required to work with all stakeholders, including teachers, staff, community and active parent groups to build a foundation of equity and access that prepares students for postsecondary success in college and careers. The school’s student body of approximately 2,375 students reflects the rich diversity and culture of its location in the Land Park area of Sacramento: 43% of its students are Hispanic/Latino, 22.3% White, 15.5% Asian, 9.3% African-American, and 5.7% students of two or more races. In addition, 62.4% of the student population is socioeconomically disadvantaged, 11.2% are English Learners, and 9.3% are Students with Disabilities. Candidates must possess a demonstrated ability to lead a culture that fosters high academic expectations in students, promotes a safe, positive learning environment, and encourages participation in extra-curricular activities.
C.K. McClatchy’s new principal will need to expand upon a rigorous program that promotes high student performance. 89.8% of the student body graduates from C.K. McClatchy while 50.42% of students meet UC and CSU A-G requirements. 2019 CAASPP results reveal 48.57% of students have not met standards in English Language Arts ( Red CA Dashboard indicators for African American, English Learner, Hispanic and Students with Disabilities) and 66.42% of students have not met standards in Mathematics (Red CA Dashboard indicators for African American and English Learner students). C.K. McClatchy’s new principal will also need to address the 6.9% suspension rate (increase of 1.9% from 2018), predominately those with Red CA Dashboard indicators for Hispanic and Students with Disabilities. The new principal will want to continue building on the high academic progress of the school while providing a safe and supportive environment that fosters social and emotional well-being and supports for all C.K. McClatchy High School students.
