Job Summary

The Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Teacher is part of a team of O&M teachers who plan and implement orientation and mobility instruction for visually impaired, multiply handicapped, and deafblind students ages 5 to 22, on the California School for the Blind (CSB) campus and in community-based settings. The O&M Teacher assesses each student’s present levels of performance in O&M; develops Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals based on assessment findings; writes assessment reports; maintains records of student progress; and keeps in contact with parents/guardians. The O&M Teacher implements teaching strategies and positive behavior management techniques to ensure maximum student participation and progress. The O&M teacher effectively communicates, collaborates, and consults with team members from other disciplines.

Requirements / Qualifications

Required Qualifications: • Successfully passing the California Basic Educational Skill Test (CBEST) • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred) • Clinical Rehabilitative Services Credential: Orientation and Mobility Desired Qualifications: • Experience working with students with Visual Impairments, sensory impairments, and/or multiple disabilities. • Commitment to the belief that all students can learn, and that maximizing student independence is the ultimate, desired outcome. • Ability to individualize instruction to meet each student’s unique needs and abilities. • Experience conducting assessments of O&M skills. • Excellent interpersonal skills, written communication skills, oral communication skills. • Ability to work collaboratively with other staff members as well as with a wide range of stakeholders, including parents, school district personnel, and community members. • Proactive self-starter with the ability to establish and rearrange priorities and maintain focus on both short-term and long-term goals. • Experience with technology to support community travel, or willingness to learn. • Valid Driver’s License
