We are searching for an experienced Courier at our Santa Maria Campus facility.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

 

COURIER

 

DEFINITION:

 

Under supervision of Operations Supervisor, this position is to drive a district vehicle to pick up and deliver mail, books, supplies, and equipment; to process incoming and outgoing mail; to receive and deliver college supplies and equipment as required; value and promote the vision and mission of the college.

 

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

 

The District courier, under limited supervision, will provide postal and shipping and receiving services that are important the college functions. Incumbents assigned these functions are expected to assist each other to complete daily work and to complete work during absences in a cooperative manner. An incumbent will exercise initiative and independent judgement with standardized procedures in this capacity. An incumbent has a high frequency of contact with other district staff and others requiring tact and good communication skills. An incumbent will be required to use a computer to input and retrieve data in the maintenance of district records.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

Drives a light truck or other district vehicle in making deliveries to various campus locations and offices and to the Lompoc Valley center.

 

Sorts, packs, and loads books, supplies, and equipment for delivery.

 

Picks up and delivers mail and packages according to a prescribed schedule.

 

Takes mail to and picks up mail at the post office.

 

Transports currency and payroll from Lompoc to main campus.

 

Assists in shelving, arranging, labeling, and storing supplies in the warehouse area and performs bulk mail routines.

 

Compiles information to prepare routine reports.

 

Maintain inventory records and logs.

 

Assists with all mailroom and college functions; assists with shipping and receiving routines by answering the telephone and taking messages, receiving shipments and delivering packages and supplies as required.

 

Maintains simple fiscal records.

 

Performs other related duties as required

 

Closing Date:

 

Monday, April 20, 2020 at end of business day, 5:00 p.m.

 

Desired start date is May 2020. This is a full-time, 37 hours per week, 12-month position

 

Work Schedule:

 

Monday - Thursday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

 

Salary and Benefits

 

• The starting salary is $2,603 per month (range 11, $2,603 to $3,165 per month on the classified bargaining unit salary schedule.)

 

• Benefits include medical, dental, life, vision (employee only), salary protection insurance, and eligibility for PERS retirement.

 

*Effective July 1, 2020 the new salary range will be range 14 on the Classified Bargaining Unit Salary Schedule.

Required Qualifications:

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Knowledge of:

 

Basic U.S. postal rates and mailing regulations and procedures;

 

Telephone etiquette;

 

Safe driving practices and traffic laws;

 

Basic elements of good English usage, spelling, arithmetic, and filing.

 

Demonstrates ability to:

 

Perform general clerical work and learn necessary postal operations, procedures, and equipment;

 

Make arithmetical computations;

 

Operate a computer with speed and accuracy and to receive data;

 

Operate a district vehicle;

 

Understand and carry out oral and written directions;

 

Develop and maintain cooperative relationship with those contacted during the course of work;

 

Sort and compare names and numbers accurately;

 

Load, unload, and carry heavy objects.

 

Education and Experience:

 

Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade and responsible experience in jobs whereby an individual has obtained the listed knowledge and abilities or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Other Requirements

 

Possession of a valid and appropriate California driver's license and qualify for district vehicle insurance coverage.

 

Working Conditions:

 

Duties are performed indoors and outdoors;

 

Work requires standing and walking for prolonged periods;

 

The incumbent will experience interruptions while performing normal duties during the regular workday.

 

The incumbent will have contact in person, by email or on the telephone, with executive, management, supervisory, academic, and classified staff and vendors.

 

The incumbent will support all district locations and may need to drive to perform job functions.

 

Physical Demands:

 

Medium work including lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting, pushing and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

 

Special Qualification:

 

A sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and to staff and students with disabilities.
