We are searching for an experienced Coordinator, STEM Learning Laboratory at our Santa Maria Campus facility.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
COORDINATOR, STEM LEARNING LABORATORY
DEFINITION:
Under supervision of the Dean, Academic Affairs, this position will plan, schedule, execute, coordinate, and assess operation of the of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)Learning Laboratory in support of the college's STEM programs. This position will also collaborate with the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Center and other campus units; values and promotes the mission and vision of the college.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
Under minimal supervision, this is a paraprofessional position expected to assume the overall responsibility for the operation of the department's learning laboratory, which provides supplemental instruction to students. The incumbent is required to perform at a skilled level with a considerable degree of independence in the learning laboratory and to work collaboratively with instructors to design, procure, and develop learning materials. Incumbents may be expected to operate the laboratory alone for extended time periods throughout the day.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Overseas the day-to-day activities of the STEM Learning Laboratory; sets and monitors goals regarding facility usage and student achievement.
Assists in the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of tutors.
Schedules tutoring within the STEM Learning Laboratory and MESA Center; schedules students for individual tutorial sessions.
Monitors the budget and processes payroll documents for STEM Learning Laboratory tutors; provides support to grant development teams to secure increased funding for STEM instruction and student support services.
Assists department instructors in the design and development of learning materials; proctors quizzes and exams as requested by faculty.
Develops supplemental instructional worksheets in a variety of STEM disciplines to meet student need.
Attends department meetings and advocates with faculty for utilization of the STEM Learning Laboratory and its programs; collaborates with faculty to provide workshops to meet student needs.
Tutors and assists students on an individual basis; diagnoses deficient knowledge and skill areas, develops intervention strategies, and prescribes practice worksheets and/or assignments.
Provides support to the STEM Counselor as needed in the center or at outreach events.
Orders materials and supplies for the STEM Center.
Assembles and maintains written records, including student folders; establishes, updates, and analyzes STEM Learning Laboratory utilization goals, student attendance, and satisfaction survey feedback. Provides this information to faculty and administrators upon request.
Develops posters, handouts, and other informational materials about the STEM Learning Laboratory and MESA Center and their services.
Maintains STEM Learning Laboratory and MESA Center college webpages in addition to related social media sites.
Supports outreach at campus events on behalf of STEM education with special focus on first generation and underrepresented students.
Collaborates with the Math Center, Learning Assistance Program, and Tutorial/Open Access Lab to promote common training and standards for tutors across the college.
Performs related functions as assigned.
Closing Date:
Thursday, January 2, 2020 at end of business day, 5:00 p.m.
Desired start date is February 2020. This is a full-time, 37 hours per week, 11-month position. Bilingual English/Spanish desired, but not required.
Work Schedule:
Monday - Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. & Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Salary and Benefits
• The starting salary is $4,339 per month (range 28, $4,339 to $5,274 per month on the classified bargaining unit salary schedule).
• Benefits include medical, dental, life, vision, salary protection insurance, and eligibility for PERS retirement.

Required Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
College-level STEM curricula germane to Learning Laboratory assignment;
Contemporary tutorial techniques for assisting students in multiple STEM disciplines and with varied learning abilities;
California Education Code, Title 5, and other regulations related to student support services;
Educational needs of community college students, especially first-generation and underrepresented students;
Operation of computer software programs specific to community colleges including Microsoft Office suite;
Social media, webpage design, and html;
Office procedures, filing, and professional correspondence and report writing;
Bilingual English/Spanish desired, but not required.
Demonstrates Ability to:
Perform at a baccalaureate level in the assigned academic field;
Assess student achievement and diagnose learning challenges;
Tutor students effectively;
Learn laboratory and department operation procedures and policies;
Interpret, and apply department and college policies and procedures relating to the Learning Laboratory;
Analyze situations accurately and make judgments on laboratory matters without immediate supervision;
Provide guidance to students on the availability and uses of instructional materials and equipment;
Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with students, faculty, and staff on campus and at other community colleges, local universities, and high school areas.
Education and Experience:
A bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) discipline with one year's experience in tutoring at least one STEM discipline.
Working Conditions:
Duties are primarily performed in an office environment, at a desk or at a computer.
The incumbent will experience interruptions while performing normal duties during the regular workday.
The incumbent will have contact, in person, by email, or on the telephone, with staff, faculty and the general public.
The workweek may include evening and Saturday work or which may change as the semester and/or program changes.
Physical Demands:
Typically may sit for extended periods of time.
Operates a computer.
Communicates over the telephone, by email and in person.
Regularly lifts, carries and/or moves objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
Special Qualification:
A sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and to staff and students with disabilities.
