ALUM ROCK UNION ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: HEALTH ASSISTANT BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the assigned management and/or supervisory position, administer basic first aid and screen ill or injured students in accordance with State laws and District regulations; assist with State health testing programs; prepare and maintain a variety of records, files and reports. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Perform basic first aid procedures for ill or injured children according to established procedures; utilize a variety of health products and supplies in caring for injuries and health needs. Administer medication as prescribed in accordance with established policies and guidelines. Administer first aid in emergency situations and notify nurse, administrator, parents or paramedics as necessary. Screen student symptoms to identify illness: determine need to be brought to attention of nurse; notify parents if necessary. Record and file immunization and related records; send follow-up notices to parents; maintain list of students who have incomplete records. Maintain the health office in a clean, orderly and safe condition; assist in maintaining inventory and order first aid and office supplies as necessary; prepare first-aid kits; maintain log of students coming in to the health office. Prepare, maintain and type a variety of health-related records and files including hearing and vision screenings, test scores, confidential student health records, emergency medical records and accident reports; prepare correspondence, forms, notices and referrals; maintain files and duplicate materials as needed. Conduct physical inspections for head lice and other related conditions. Prepare annual school reports including immunizations, vision and hearing and inventory of supplies. Assist nurse in hearing and vision screening activities; prepare related records. Process incoming records on new students; record vision and hearing screening results and referrals; assure compliance with State regulations for immunizations and physicals. Operate a variety of office equipment including a typewriter, copier and computer. Perform related duties as assigned. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Laws, rules and regulations related to assigned activities. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Health and safety regulations. Technical aspects of field of specialty. Objectives and procedures related to the school health program. First aid and CPR techniques and practices. ABILITY TO: Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Maintain records and prepare reports. Learn department and program objectives and goals. Maintain current knowledge of program rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions. Determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines. Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Observe health and safety regulations. Work confidentially with discretion. Perform clerical duties such as filing, typing, duplicating and maintaining routine records. Administer first aid and CPR. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school and two years experience working with children, or equivalent. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency. Some positions in this classification may require the ability to read, write and speak in a designated second language. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Office environment. Constant interruptions. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching. Seeing to read.
