Sacramento City Unified School District seeks a principal to lead Phoebe Hearst Elementary in its mission to use resources, expertise, talents and creativity to help every student achieve literacy in all academic areas and to foster responsibility and self-esteem. Phoebe Hearst Elementary offers a structured and highly rigorous education in an extremely positive academic climate, fostered by great parent participation as well as enrichment opportunities both in and out of the classroom. Each class at Phoebe Hearst operates under the BASIC Model, an educational program that emphasizes the development of strong skills in Language Arts and Mathematics, excellent study habits, exemplary citizenship and attendance. Authentic collaboration between parents and teachers creates ideal conditions for student learning and high levels of achievement. Beginning in first grade, Phoebe students are also identified for the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Program. Phoebe Hearst is a GATE center and students are allotted spots in designated GATE classes through a district lottery. In the GATE classes at each grade level 2-6, students are offered challenging learning opportunities aligned to the Common Core State Standards. The classes are designed to meet the needs of advanced learners with emphasis on critical thinking, problem solving, and logical reasoning. Phoebe Hearst’s student body of 672 students reflects approximately 51.3% white, 3.9% African American, 22.1% Hispanic, .7% English Learners, and 18% Socioeconomically Disadvantaged.

The current California Dashboard indicators are blue for both ELA and Math and 81.4 points above and 62.6 points above standard respectively. Phoebe Hearst’s new principal will need to address areas of concern with student growth. Being a BASIC school, children come in prepared and learning at high levels. Working to ensure that students are not just achieving at high levels but achieving growth is a part of an ongoing site commitment to Phoebe’s scholars.
TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A bachelor's degree from an approved institution is required. Advanced degrees are preferred. A minimum of five years of certificated experience in public or private schools is required, and preference will be given for additional elementary school teaching experience, administrative, or supervisorial experience at the elementary level. Preference given to bilingual speakers, and expertise in vital programs within individual schools including, but not limited to, STEAM, Montessori, Dual Immersion, Waldorf, etc.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Must hold a valid Administrative Services Credential issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing is required.
