SFUSD JOB DESCRIPTION CAREER/TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) INSTRUCTIONAL SPECIALIST -TEACHER ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT (TSA) SALARY RANGE: Per agreement between UESF & SFUSD LENGTH OF SERVICE: Equal to the service days in the UESF contract LOCATION: Academics and Professional Development POSITION DESCRIPTION The CTE Instructional Specialist will support the Career/Technical Education focus in Academics and Professional Development, designed to support all schools in the district with implementation of culturally and linguistically responsive, academically rigorous K-12 career pathways that prepare all students for postsecondary success. This includes ensuring that all students graduate from high school possessing the knowledge, skills, and abilities they need to successfully pursue their career and educational options and make informed choices about their future.” CTE is defined by the California Department of Education as “a program of study that involves a multi-year sequence of courses that integrate core academic knowledge with technical and occupational knowledge to provide students with a pathway to post-secondary education and careers”. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Under the supervision of the Career/Technical Education Supervisor, the CTE Instructional Specialist will: • Coach CTE teachers in effective teaching practices using the SFUSD standards-based curriculum to support closing the achievement and access gap, accelerating and sustaining student achievement, and preparing students as successful 21st century citizens. • Collaborate with Career/Technical Education staff, other APD and SOIS staff, site teachers, and administrators to develop, support and implement a rigorous CTE standards-based instruction program to ensure a relevant career-focused curriculum. • Coordinate the Career/Technical Education professional development program to ensure SFUSD staff is provided current best practices in the delivery of new technologies, awareness of CTE framework and standards, and assistance in integrating CTE standards into core curriculum. • Support CTE teachers in their Microsoft Specialist certification process in at least one of the following: PowerPoint, Word, Excel. • Support the compliance requirements of the Regional Occupation Program (ROP). and Vocational Technical Education Act (VTEA) funds to integrate technology in science, engineering and health careers programs. • Provide professional development for high school and middle school counselors, including tools to make CTE programs relevant to students and parents. • Coach teachers at school sites to support effective teaching of the district’s adopted standards-based materials. • Collaborate with district departments to articulate coherent and comprehensive standards-based educational programs to ensure all students access the core curriculum. • Support curriculum technology integration in the subject matter area. • Address the issues of race/ethnicity, language, culture, and underserved population as they impact career/technical education/instruction. • Perform other duties as assigned. JOB REQUIREMENTS Experience coaching or mentoring teachers in career/technical education; planning and facilitating career/technical education professional development; addressing equity issues related to access and achievement; working with underserved student and parent populations; coordinating and organizing educational and community resources; working successfully with multiple audiences, including school-based administrators, teachers, parents/community members, and students; participation in professional organizations, district and state initiatives. Skill in designing career/technical education professional development activities, conducting meetings and presentations, facilitating work group activities; researching, interpreting, analyzing, reporting, and utilizing data and evaluating processes and resources; operating a computer, and accessing Internet resources. Knowledge of professional development theory, effective instructional practices, California CTE standards and CTE educational issues and trends; practices and trends related to the integration of technology into instruction; the development of rigorous programs in science technology and engineering and math (STEM) courses. Ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups and coordinate activities, address access and equity issues; communicate effectively orally and in written form; manage time and tasks; exercise sound judgment; model norms of behavior that reflect high expectations for colleagues, students, and community members; travel to various locations; work flexible hours; Physical abilities include standing and sitting for extended periods, talking/hearing, near and far visual acuity, pushing/pulling, lifting, reaching, carrying, field of vision, fine manual dexterity. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • Valid California Teaching Credential • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with career and technical education. • Experience with SFUSD program coordination and operations • Experience planning and implementing professional development programs. • Familiarity with CTE curriculum development and alignment • Familiarity with collecting and using data for evaluation and program improvement purposes • Demonstrated sensitivity toward special populations including disabled students, students with limited English proficiency, economically disadvantaged students and/or individuals in occupations nontraditional for their gender. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS • Credentialed – Permanent Teacher with at least 3-5 years of teaching experience. • Counseling experience / credential desirable • Previous experience as a Teacher on Special Assignment desirable • Background in one of the STEM areas (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). • Possession of CLAD/BCLAD certification • Training in systemic facilitation. • Bilingual/biliterate NECESSARY MATERIALS FOR APPLICATION • Letter of interest outlining skills, training, and experience related to the position; • Current resume • Two (2) letters of recommendation; • Completed SFUSD application; • Copy of valid teaching credential
