Job Summary

Primary Activities include, but are not limited to the following: Custodial/Maintenance staff are responsible for cleaning buildings, removing debris, and keeping areas neat and tidy. As a custodian, your primary responsibility is to clean the campus following procedures for the proper use of chemical cleaners and power equipment for your safety and in order to prevent damage to the facility. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: Perform daily general cleaning throughout the school including Empty trash cans and recycling bins Sweep, mop and vacuum floors in classrooms, administration building, bathrooms, and student changing rooms. Clean and disinfect bathrooms Clean and disinfect lunch tables and lunch area. Replenish soap, toilet paper and paper towels in bathrooms and staff lounge Maintain a regular schedule of additional cleaning tasks such as: Clean and disinfect drinking fountains. Wash windows and windowsills. Dust furniture, walls, machines and equipment. Disinfect door handles, light switches, desks and chairs Clean up bodily fluids when needed, disinfect area. Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance. Troubleshoot and repair minor plumbing and electrical issues. Move heavy equipment and furniture. Monthly maintenance of fire extinguishers throughout campus. Submit monthly Requisition for custodial supplies. Maintain an organized and tidy custodial supply closet. Ensure all cleaning products are labeled according to MSDS guidelines. Identify and report needed facility repairs to the Assistant Principal. Perform security and safety tasks after operating hours.

Requirements / Qualifications

Experience with working with children preferred but not required.

Cleaning Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, washing windows, scrubbing tables and desktops, emptying trash cans, sanitizing washrooms . . . School Custodians do whatever tasks are needed to keep the facility looking good and functioning properly. Besides aesthetics, their efforts contribute to keeping pests away and reducing the spread of germs. Grounds upkeep School Custodians often are charged with raising the U.S. flag each morning. Other duties outside the building may include mowing grass, trimming bushes, weeding, removing debris from playgrounds and parking areas, setting up traffic cones and directing carline. Maintenance When a light bulb needs to be changed, a window unstuck, a soap dispenser filled, a ceiling tile replaced or a coat of paint added, School Custodians take the lead. Depending on their level of knowledge, they also may perform services on pipes, heaters, air conditioners and wiring. When third party repair people are called in, School Custodians may guide them to the proper place or explain the problem. Safety School Custodians keep a lookout for potential problems, such as cracked sidewalks or faulty chairs. They abide by institutional and governmental guidelines regarding procedures and safety measures, such as keeping cleaning products away from children. School Custodians also are part of the administration’s eyes and ears and can play a large part in spotting tensions among students and curbing vandalism. If they are the first to arrive in the morning or the last to leave at night, School Custodians may be in charge of unlocking and locking doors. Assisting staff Teachers and administrators may ask School Custodians to perform tasks such as moving furniture, fixing broken lockers, unloading deliveries and handling an unexpected spill.
