Cabrillo College is accepting applications for temporary, part-time faculty assignment(s) for EOPS/CARE Counselors that may become available in the Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 semesters. Interviews for possible Fall 2019 assignments are slated for August of 2019.

Cabrillo College serves approximately 11,400 students per term, of which 45.13% are LatinX, 5.26% multi-ethnic, 2.64% Asian, 1.25% African-American, 0.79% Filipino, 0.30% American Indian or Alaskan Native, and 0.18% Pacific Islander as of Fall 2018. At Cabrillo, 56.66% of students are students of color and 54.91% are economically disadvantaged. Examples of Duties

 

The EOPS/CARE Counselor responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

• Counsel and advise students on both an appointment and drop-in basis

• Plan, develop, coordinate and implement EOPS and CARE program activities

• Develop and manage budget and service requirements

• Keep abreast of regulations and laws that affect EOPS and CARE students

• Determine EOPS and CARE student eligibility and prepare annual reports

• Serve as a liaison and source of information regarding program policies and procedures, with college administration, college programs, and community agencies to maximize service for EOPS and CARE students

• Provide transitional counseling on an individual and group basis to designated CARE and EOPS program participants

• Teach Introduction to College classes and/or conduct workshops or teach success strategies to CARE and EOPS students with special focus on those who may experience academic difficulty

• Maintain files on matters in progress and expedite successful completion; coordinate and monitor special projects, assignments and activities

• Provide academic transfer/vocational and personal counseling and follow-up in assessing, planning, and implementing students' long-range academic goals, and assist students to develop appropriate educational plans

• May provide bilingual (English/Spanish) services to program participants and their parents

• Assist students with all necessary applications

• Provide student counseling and follow-up related to personal, family, or other social concerns related to program participants' education

• Refer students to appropriate services on-and-off campus for assistance, support, or advice beyond the scope of the EOPS/CARE program

• Review students' schedule of classes to ensure that individual students are pursuing a planned educational program

• Provide students with institutional information about financial aid, college policies, and procedures

• Participate in and assist with orientation activities

• Attend counseling staff meetings and statewide EOPS and CARE meetings as appropriate to the assignment

• Act as a student advocate and liaison between Financial Aid Office and other agencies

• Select, supervise, coordinate, and evaluate student employees as assigned and submit accurate records, time cards, and other required documents in a timely manner

• Perform specialized work duties as necessary during registration periods

• Provide formal in-service training

• Perform related duties as required and/or assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Required:

 

• Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or career development AND

 

• Have completed a minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages OR

• Have completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages AND

 

• Two (2) years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages OR

• The equivalent OR

• A lifetime California Community College Counselor Credential

 

Required Professional Expertise:

 

• Knowledge of and commitment to counseling/teaching strategies and methods which enhance student success at community colleges, including effective use of technology

• Effective oral and written communication skills

• Demonstrated ability to effectively perform the duties/teach the courses as described above

• Demonstrated ability to communicate well with students of diverse academic, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds; gender identities, sexual orientations; and students with disabilities

• Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others

 

Program Specific Requirements:

 

• EOPS and CARE state guidelines

• Appropriate record and file maintenance procedures

• Federal Family Educational Rights and Policy Act (FERPA)

• Operation of computer equipment and various software applications

• Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California driver's license and a safe driving record during the course of employment

 

Desired Qualifications/Performance Expectations:

 

• Recent successful teaching experience at the community college level

• Demonstrated ability to employ innovative counseling techniques and methodologies

• Experience teaching diverse student populations

• Successful online teaching experience

• Knowledge of culturally-responsive pedagogical teaching techniques and effective ways for engaging students who are historically under-represented and under-served.

• Bilingual in English/Spanish

 

Equivalency Requirements:

 

Equivalency to an academic degree shall include the same depth of knowledge in the discipline and breadth of general education that is required for the degree to meet the minimum qualifications. Equivalent preparation for employment shall be considered under any one category or any combination of the categories listed below:

 

• Degree in related field with equivalent course work in the required discipline as indicated by transcripts and/or thesis subject.

• Equivalent degrees from foreign universities (as determined by a reputable foreign educational credential evaluation service).

• Course work at an accredited institution of higher education AND state-approved continuing education units applicable for maintaining licensure AND/OR an internship for licensure AND/OR equivalent professional or work experience AND/OR equivalent verifiable accomplishments of eminence in the discipline including but not limited to: publications, research, seminars, creative works, professional performances or exhibitions, honors or awards.

 

*Note: Graduate students currently working on a Master's degree are encouraged to apply, with the understanding that the graduate student must complete the Supplemental Application for Equivalency Determination form.

 

Additional Information

 

$1,221 - $1,873 per teaching unit, per semester, depending on education and experience. Cabrillo College provides a doctoral stipend of $82 per unit for eligible adjunct faculty. Assignments may be at various campus locations; days, evenings, and/or weekends; hours to be arranged.

Initial eligibility for a District-paid benefit stipend for medical and dental insurance is established at the end of two (2) consecutive academic years, including work done as a temporary contract or emergency hire, during which the member worked 15 or more teaching units in the academic year; summer sessions preceding the academic year, fall, winter and spring of the academic year. At the end of this two-year period, the unit member is eligible for benefits the following academic year. Once initial eligibility has been established, an adjunct unit member maintains eligibility for the district-paid benefits stipend if the unit member works 12 or more teaching units each year.
