General Purpose:
Under general supervision, plans and coordinates regular and special education bus schedules and organizes curricular and activity trips as necessary to transport students; plans and reschedules buses for late-in, early-out, and student free days; coordinates and assigns scheduled work left unfilled due to bus driver absences; performs the duties of a school bus driver to maintain appropriate service levels; and performs related duties as assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is a full journey-level class requiring a thorough knowledge of the laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to the operation of all classes of vehicles in the District’s fleet of buses and passenger vans.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

- Monitors schedules, routes, and bus driver availability to ensure that daily transportation needs of regular and special education students are met.
- Coordinates and assigns scheduled work left unfilled due to bus driver absences.
- Assists in coordinating with school administrators regarding schedule changes, activity trips, and athletic events affecting transportation needs.
- Contacts emergency services and school administrators regarding vehicle collisions.
- Operates a computer to verify pertinent student and routing information and prints a variety of reports as necessary.
- Confers with parents regarding student transportation issues.
- Operates a two-way radio base station and communicates with drivers according to established radio procedures.
Other Duties:
- Performs minor maintenance, servicing and repairs to District buses, vans and vehicles.
- Performs a variety of office and administrative support duties as assigned.
- Performs the duties of a school bus driver, as necessary.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Transportation planning procedures such as routing, scheduling, and route consolidation.
- Principles of instruction and training.
- Safe and defensive driving practices.
- Proper operation of school vans and buses of various sizes.
- Applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes, and regulations.
- Basic first aid procedures, including CPR.
- Basic record keeping techniques.
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
- Applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws.
Ability to:
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Maintain records and prepare reports.
- Read and interpret maps.
- Observe health and safety regulations.
- Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
- Conduct safety inspections and perform routine preventative maintenance.
- Administer first aid to ill or injured children, including CPR.
- Interpret, apply, and explain applicable laws, codes, and regulations.
- Communicate effectively with others.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Education, Training, and Experience:
- Graduation from high school, G.E.D. equivalency, or higher.
- Five (5) years of experience in the operation of all school bus types.
- Experience in dispatching, scheduling routes, and providing training for bus drivers is preferred, but not required.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
- A valid California Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License, with passenger endorsement and air brakes certification.
- A valid First Aid and CPR certificate issued by an agency recognized by the district.
- A valid School Bus Driver’s Certificate issued by the California Highway Patrol.
- A valid H6 issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Possession of a valid State of California Department of Education School Bus Driver Trainer Certificate.
- Possession of a valid D-51 Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
Incumbents must pass Department Of Transportation bi-annual physical exam (DL-51).

- Maintain vision requirements established for School Bus Drivers by the DMV.
- Bend, twist, stoop, kneel, walk, run, and crawl.
- Perform light to intermediate physical exertion.
- Mechanic shop level noise.
- Lift, carry, push, pull or move objects weighting up to 75 pounds.
- Reach in all directions.
- Interact with the general public.
- Exposure to fumes and vibrations.
- Stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time.
- Drive in various weather conditions, including hot and cold temperatures, and poor visibility.
- Work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
- Read, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures
