DESCRIPTION

Napa Valley College is seeking individuals with demonstrated instructional skills to join an outstanding team of faculty and instructional administrators to provide high quality programs and services to our district, our community, and most importantly, our students.  This position provides counseling and instruction within Disability Support Programs and Services (DSPS), beginning August 2019 (fall semester). 

 

This full-time, tenure-track faculty position works a 175-day faculty work year, plus 23 additional days of counseling services to support activities related to the division/DSPS department, as approved by the Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of DSPS, and in accordance with the district/faculty agreement.  Appointments are contingent upon approval of the college's Board of Trustees.  Initial salary placement is $67,313-$78,259 annually, with future steps to $110,631.  Placement on the salary range is commensurate with education and experience.  The college offers a fringe benefit package, including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, employee assistance program, and CalSTRS membership. 

 

Assignment may include a combination of day, evening, weekend, off-campus classes, and online or other technology-supported instruction.  All contract and regular faculty are required to adhere to contractual obligations, meet assigned classes, maintain regular office hours, assist and advise students, participate in division activities and appropriate college committees, including regular faculty meetings of the department, division and College.  Napa Valley College believes in ongoing professional development that assists faculty in improving their teaching skills, providing support to students, and encouraging responsibility within the college community.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications

 

Education:

1)  Earned Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling; 

 

OR

 

2)  Earned Master's degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling; OR 

 

Bachelor's degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT);

 

AND

 

Either 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work related to people with disabilities; OR

 

Completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services program or in a program dealing with people with disabilities; OR

 

Two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following:

 

A)  Counseling students with disabilities; OR

B)  Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities are for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent.  

 

OR

 

3)  The equivalent.  If you do not possess the stated minimum educational qualifications as stated in #1 - #2 above and are seeking consideration on the basis of equivalency, a Request for Equivalency Review (Download PDF reader) form must be submitted at the time of application. 

 

All degrees must be from an accredited institution.

 

Experience: 

1)  Completion of one-year minimum full-time (or equivalent) community college/college/university counseling experience with students with disabilities. 

 

2)  Knowledge of: 

a) California state and federal laws governing equal access and opportunity for individuals with disabilities in higher education, including: Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504, Section 508, the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act 2008, DSPS Title V Regulations;

 

b) Functional aspects of disability, their impact in an educational setting, and appropriate, effective academic adjustments;

 

c) Community resources serving persons with disabilities;

 

d) Laws, reporting requirements, ethical standards and confidentiality related to provision of counseling services in a community college setting.

 

2)  Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic background of community college students. 

 

Desirable Professional Competencies

Learning Disability Certification and experience in testing.

Two years, or more, full-time (or equivalent) community college/college/university counseling or counseling/teaching experience with students with disabilities.
