Basic Function: Under the general direction and supervision of the Chief Business Official, serves as a member of the school sites and district management teams. Is responsible for planning and supervising the District’s maintenance, operations and transportation programs; inspects and evaluates the performance of assigned personnel; performs skilled and semi-skilled work in one or more maintenance trades; and performs other related duties as directed.
Work Schedule: 243 days/fiscal year
Representative Duties:
- Assigns, directs, coordinates, and supervises the work of maintenance, custodial, grounds, and transportation workers
- Schedules and supervises the maintenance, operations, and transportation (MOT) services throughout the District, inspecting, checking, and training for proper utilization of time, materials, and equipment
- Consult with the construction supervisor as bond projects are planned and implemented
- Identifies and assesses maintenance needs and establishes priorities for District maintenance and facilities projects
- Inspects buildings to determine if proper custodial methods and standards are followed and maintained
- Gives instructions, as necessary, to employees on the use of materials and equipment in the performance of their duties
- Tests and evaluates new products, materials, and equipment and makes appropriate recommendations
- Assists in the selection of MOT personnel and evaluates their performance
- Coordinates and provides for in-service training of all MOT personnel
- Is responsible for the development and implementation of procedures designated to improve plant safety and protect school property
- Monitors work performed by contractors on District facilities and assists in planning and coordinating such work
- Plans for accommodating community use of school buildings and grounds
- Develops and monitors bus schedules for the home-school transportation program
- Provides knowledge of school district maintenance and repair work to MOT personnel
- Schedules preventative maintenance, servicing, and overhauling of District automotive and mechanical equipment
- Reviews and approves supply and equipment requisitions
- Maintains records and prepares reports including hazardous materials compliance requirements
- Develops and implements the District’s deferred maintenance and facilities plans
- Attends meetings of the Governing Board and District staff as directed
- Is available and “on-call” for District security and emergency needs
- Performs other related duties as assigned
- Performs such non-related duties as may be required to meet immediate District needs
Knowledge of:
- Standard practices of maintenance, custodial and grounds trades, including the methods, materials, terms and equipment used in installation, alteration and repair
- Principles and practices of administration, supervision and training
- Principles and practices of record keeping, budgeting, expenditure, and inventory control
- Safety rules, codes and regulations applied to building, maintenance, and transportation programs
Abilities:
- Budget, forecast, and plan using business management applications such as databases and spreadsheets
- Plan, organize, coordinate and direct work of others in a supervisory capacity
- Plan, prioritize and organize a variety of maintenance, facility and repair projects
- Evaluate, plan and schedule work
- Use and operate safely a variety of hand tools, power tools, and other equipment used for building maintenance purposes
- Draw up basic plans and specifications for maintenance projects
- Read, interpret and work from drawings and blue prints
- Understand and carry out a variety of complex instructions in an independent manner
- Diagnose maintenance and repair problems quickly and effectively, and take appropriate action to resolve same
- Keep records and prepare reports
- Prepare accurate time and material estimates for maintenance and facilities projects
- Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective work relationships with others
- Perform heavy manual labor; lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Drive vehicle to work sites; use legal and safe driving practices
- Follow District policies and procedures
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer and office equipment, sitting or standing for extended periods of time, hearing and speaking to exchange information on the telephone or in person, vision to read documents, reaching horizontally and above the shoulders to retrieve files and supplies, and lifting objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
Qualifications:
Graduation from high school; AA or BA/BS degree desirable. Valid California Driver’s License required.
Experience:
- One year journeyman level duties in electrical, plumbing or carpentry trades
- Experiencing managing projects, supervising personnel and coordinating services with other management personnel
