TITLE OF POSITION:                        CUSTODIAN – LEAD (High School)

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:  The job of "Custodian - Lead" is done for the purpose/s of maintaining a safe and sanitary environment; providing adequate arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; and minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure.  The Lead Custodian is responsible to the principal. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Cleans facilities, grounds, and classrooms for the purpose of maintaining a safe and sanitary environment.
  • Arranges furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events.
  • Secures facilities for the purpose of minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure.
  • Informs pupils, staff, and supervisor for the purpose of providing information regarding activities, requested information, safety and/or proper maintenance of facilities.
  • Procures equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining an inventory and completing jobs efficiently within budget guidelines.
  • Directs personnel as assigned for the purpose of maximizing the efficiency of the workforce and meeting shift requirements.
  • Assists in general school operations by receiving and distributing supplies; assists in moving heavy objects.
  • Maintains cooperative and effective working relationships with teachers, staff, and students.
  • During summer or recess periods, performs heavy cleaning work.
  • Provides orientation and training to the custodians.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Operates manual and automatic sprinkler systems in order to water lawns, planters, and other surfaces.  Raises and lowers flags.
  • Turns on heating and air conditioning equipment and adjusts for temperature changes, if applicable.
  • Assembles and does light repairs furniture and equipment for the purpose of ensuring usability of items.

ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS - QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience Required: Prior job related experience of five years with increasing levels of responsibility, preferably in school and/or institutional setting with a good work history which demonstrated reliability and responsibility.
  • Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required: Skills of maintaining safe work practices; use of cleaning agents; supplies and equipment; calculating accurate dilution of cleaning agents.  Knowledge of methods and use of cleaning materials, equipment and supplies. Abilities to follow oral and written instructions; work independently and with minimal supervision; perform a variety of tasks; adjust to flexible assignments often with short notice; and communicate with students, staff and the public.  Significant physical abilities include standing for extended periods, lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, stooping, reaching/handling, and near and far visual acuity/depth perception.
  • Education Required: High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:  Valid driver's license and evidence of insurability, TB Test clearance, Criminal Justice Fingerprint clearance.
