Requirements / Qualifications

Overview: The Assistant Dean of Students for Middle School works under the guidance of the Dean of Students and School Culture to address student disciplinary issues and culture and climate as it relates to students in grades 6-8, and is in constant and close communication with major constituencies in the school including students, parents, and educators. The Assistant Dean of Students’ work will focus closely on ensuring a developmentally appropriate and humane transitional experience for entering students and classes, as well as developing programming and content to ensure the middle school student body is acculturated to the norms and philosophies of the school. The Assistant Dean of Students will work closely with the Middle School Division Director, the Learning Specialist, the Dean of Academics, and the Dean of Students and School Culture to monitor student learning and progress and behavioral and social-emotional wellbeing. They will attend important middle school events and co-create and curate events with the Dean of Students and School Culture and other departments. They will also advise a group of middle school students in the advisory program, and may also be an advisor to other select middle school programs or clubs.

Qualifications: • A Masters’ Degree or higher in education-related or career-counseling field (social sciences, psychology, education, social work, student programming), and/or demonstrated counseling experience in an academic or educational environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience • Ability to deeply and authentically connect with youth (6th-12th graders) • A passion for leading, coaching, mentoring, or guiding youth through a variety of incidents and moments in their lives • A professional, warm, but firm demeanor with youth; an understanding of and practicing of balance and boundaries with youth in conversations and relationships • Strong conflict resolution skills/experience with restorative and developmentally holistic and appropriate conflict management with youth • A commitment to advocating for students of all needs, elevating student voices to drive school policies and decisions, and a commitment to advance a culture of equity and Geffen Academy’s School-Wide Learning Goals • Demonstrated competency in utilizing restorative practices and principles in disciplinary conversations • Demonstrated competency in facilitating conversations with diverse populations; an understanding and awareness of important tenets of cross-cultural communication, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in an educational setting • The ability to think at the speed necessary for and be spontaneous and flexible with students, and be able to tailor responses immediately and carefully to different student needs • Excellent written, spoken, and non-verbal communication skills • Excellent organizational skills, the ability to maintain a variety of different projects and tasks at one time
