POSITION: Program Specialist

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Program Specialist, SELPA (Special Education Local Plan Area) provides support in the form of consultation, coaching, one-to-one and group presentations, classroom support, and information for effective instructional and behavioral strategies. These services are available for regular and special education, designated instruction and services personnel, others providing instructional services to children and adolescents with exceptional needs. The Program Specialist must also have advanced training and related experience in the education of individuals with exceptional needs.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Observe, consult and assist staff in the planning and implementation of individual educational programs for children with exceptional needs.
• Provide consultation, instructional and behavioral support to address the needs of students with mild to moderate and moderate to severe disabilities.
• Plan programs, coordinate curricular resources, make them available and evaluate effectiveness of programs for individuals with exceptional needs..
• Monitor programmatic developments.
• Recommend research based instructional strategies affecting elementary and intermediate school intervention programs, specifically for reading, math, written language and career development.
• Participate in staff development, program development, including meetings/processes that are innovative or special methods and approaches.
• Provide coordination, consultation and program development in areas to which the program specialist is assigned.
• Assure that all students have full educational opportunity.
• Assist the district to meet federal and state standards and reporting requirements for special education programs that are compliant and instructionally sound.
• Facilitate acquisitions and use of instructional materials, resources, and equipment including Assistive technology.
• Provide support for classroom management, student transitions, and student positive behavior interventions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: Three to five years of teaching or providing related special education services to students with exceptional needs.

Education: Masters degree

Certification: Valid Clear or Level II CA Education Specialist-Mild/Moderate with Autism Spectrum Disorders authorization or CA Education Specialist Moderate/Severe Credential (detailed credential version) or equivalent.

Skills: Plan, implement, assess and evaluate programs.
Communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
Effectively transmit knowledge and skills to others.
Plan, develop, and conduct meetings and training programs.
Maintain positive working relationships with administrators, teachers, parents, and others.

Abilities: To understand and communicate laws and regulations.
Develop effective staff inservices and other presentations.
Establish appropriate priorities and deadlines for completion of projects.
Exercise sound judgment. Work varied hours at multiple work locations.

Requirements / Qualifications

If you do not hold a California English Learner Authorization, your application may still be considered.
