About the Employer

We are a unified school district serving more than 16,150 students in grades K -12. We have thirteen elementary schools, four middle schools, two comprehensive high schools, three specialized high schools, two alternative high schools and one K-8 school. We also offer a home schooling program, adult education courses and other unique programs to fit the needs of all students. Our school district employs approximately 1,100 certificated and nearly 900 classified employees. ANTIOCH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of identified Title I students in a classroom, laboratory or other learning environment; tutor students in assigned subject areas; provide clerical program support. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Tutor individual or small groups of identified Title I students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher; monitor and oversee student drills, practices and assignments in various subjects; assist assigned teacher with the implementation of lesson plans. Assist students in completing classroom assignments, homework and projects in various subject areas such as reading and math; assure student understanding of classroom rules and procedures; assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance. Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas and displays and distributing and collecting paper, supplies and materials. Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of classroom and program activities such as preparing, typing, duplicating, filing and laminating instructional materials; grade student tests and assignments; record grades; maintain student files and program records; assist with ordering supplies as directed. Observe and control behavior of students in the classroom according to approved procedures; report progress regarding student performance and behavior. Read age-appropriate stories to students; assist in the development of student writing skills. Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; maintain learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manner. Communicate with District personnel and outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns. Operate a variety of office and classroom equipment including a copier, computer and assigned software. Participate in the preparation of the Title I newsletter including selecting articles, typing, adding pictures and editing utilizing assigned software. OTHER DUTIES: Assist with yard duty activities as assigned; monitor children and assure playground rules are followed. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Problems and concerns of students with special needs. Basic child guidance principles and practices. Safe practices in classroom activities. Basic subjects taught in District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Basic instructional methods and techniques. Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct. Operation of standard office and classroom equipment including a computer. Oral and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Basic record-keeping techniques. ABILITY TO: Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom, laboratory or assigned learning environment. Reinforce instruction to individual or small groups of identified Title I students as directed by the teacher. Learn applicable sections of the State Education Code related to assigned activities and Title I guidelines. Monitor, observe and report student behavior and progress according to approved policies and procedures. Understand and relate to children with special needs. Perform a variety of clerical duties including typing, filing and duplicating materials. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Operate standard office and classroom equipment including a computer. Observe health and safety regulations. Maintain routine records. Use assigned software at an introductory level. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or the equivalent. Special Qualifications upon hire for positions at a school site that is supported by Title I funds pursuant to the "No Child Left Behind Act of 2001": Complete at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education (college level) OR Obtained an associate's (or higher) degree OR Met (pass) an assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics OR reading, writing, and mathematics readiness. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Classroom environment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
