ANTIOCH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: VEHICLE & EQUIPMENT MECHANIC BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Supervisor-Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance, perform skilled mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance and repair of school buses and a variety of large and small diesel, gas and alternative-fueled vehicles and equipment. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Perform skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, servicing and repair of school buses and a variety of large and small diesel, gas and alternative-fueled vehicles and equipment; assure safe and proper operating condition of District vehicles and power-driven equipment. Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot and repair school bus, truck and car problems and malfunctions; repair or replace parts and components as needed; perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Diagnose, repair or replace vehicle transmissions; repair, adjust or replace various components such as carburetors, batteries, alternators, radiators, hoses, belts, bearings, gears, differentials, distributors, pumps, thermostats, starters, generators, cylinders, hydraulic rams, fuel lines and joints. Adjust, repair and maintain brake systems; install and replace air brakes and other hardware; adjust and reline brakes; perform transmission, motor and engine inspections, overhauls, maintenance and repairs; perform minor and major tune-ups on District vehicles and equipment. Perform scheduled preventive maintenance safety checks and inspections as required; assure compliance with California Highway Patrol school bus maintenance regulations and other requirements; prepare related documentation. Service vehicles and equipment with fuel, oil, grease, water and hydraulic fluids; service oil filters; assure proper fluid levels; lubricate gearboxes; drain and refill crankcases; replace fuses; assure proper air levels of tires and fill as needed; replace, rotate and balance tires; repair and patch flats. Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair mower, tractor, backhoe, sweeper, welder and various other grounds and maintenance equipment malfunctions; replace parts and components as needed; maintain and repair trailers. Inspect, diagnose, repair and maintain vehicle lighting, wiring, fuel, air conditioning, exhaust, hydraulic, steering and cooling systems as assigned; diagnose and repair electrical systems; test and repair electrical circuits and components; repair wheelchair lifts. Perform minor body work; install, maintain and replace flooring, upholstery, mirrors and glass. Operate and maintain a variety of equipment such as air tools, jacks, steam cleaners, testers, meters, lifts and various hand and power tools; drive a vehicle to conduct work. Complete assigned tasks; interpret diagrams, sketches, schematics, technical manuals and specifications; work from verbal and written instructions and work orders. Communicate with District personnel and various outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns. Clean equipment utilizing steam cleaner; maintain shop area, equipment and tools in a safe, clean and orderly condition. Maintain a variety of records related to inspections, projects, maintenance, repairs and assigned activities. Respond to emergency road calls and perform related field work as directed. OTHER DUTIES: Perform related duties as assigned. ABILITY TO: Perform skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, servicing and repair of school buses and a variety of large and small diesel, gas and alternative-fueled vehicles and equipment. Troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve mechanical problems and malfunctions. Repair or replace a variety of parts and components. Perform required inspections, preventive maintenance and servicing of buses, vehicles and other equipment. Interpret and apply CHP and other requirements for maintenance of District vehicles. Operate a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment. Observe health and safety regulations and procedures. Work from sketches, diagrams, blueprints, plans and specifications. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Meet schedules and time lines. Work independently with little direction. Maintain records and prepare reports. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by completion of an approved apprenticeship program in automotive repair and three years experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel and alternative-powered vehicles and equipment. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake and passenger endorsements. Valid Medical Card.
