Deeper Learning Coach, Envision Learning Partners

About Us

Envision Learning Partners (ELP) is a nonprofit educational consulting service whose mission is to help schools and districts engage every student in America in a high-quality system of performance assessment. We believe that when young people are challenged by work that is rigorous and real-world, and when they are given opportunities to revise and reflect along the way, then they are liberated to realize their potential.

ELP provides professional development, leadership coaching, and assessment tools that improve teaching and learning and deliver meaningful outcomes for students. Our clients are schools, school districts, and state departments of education all across the country. After seven years of service to the field, and having recently merged with the Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning, and Equity (SCALE), ELP has emerged as the go-to consultant and professional development provider in the area of performance assessment, as well as a nationally recognized thought leader in the growing movement for “deeper learning.”

ELP is a subdivision of Envision Education, a charter management organization whose mission is to transform the lives of students—especially those who will be the first in their family to attend college—by preparing them for success in college, in career, and in life. Located in the San Francisco Bay Area, Envision operates three high schools and one middle school whose organizing principle is high-quality performance assessment. A hallmark of Envision is our Portfolio & Defense system, which challenges our students at 8th, 10th, and 12th grades to curate evidence of their learning and to defend that portfolio of work before a panel. College persistence rates for Envision Schools' graduates—80% of whom are the first in their families to attend and graduate from college—are significantly higher than the national averages for students of comparable demographics.

Envision Education is proud to be living out what we believe is the original vision of charter schools—to innovate in small spaces and then share proven or promising practices with others. Rather than opening many schools, Envision is scaling what it has learned through its consulting service, Envision Learning Partners.

We are growing our team of Deeper Learning Coaches

Demand for our services is growing, and we need to hire our next Deeper Learning Coach. We’re looking for a veteran educator who is versed in the art and science of performance assessment, is a top-notch designer and provider of adult professional development, and can coach leaders to effect change in systems. It is also vital that a Deeper Learning Coach shares in the organization’s commitment to equity and social justice.

A Deeper Learning Coach participates in collaborative design work with ELP colleagues but often delivers service on his or her own, out on the road. The ideal candidate draws energy from teamwork but also has the confidence, adaptability, and project management skills to operate independently. The coach will travel extensively depending on his or her portfolio of clients, typically two to three times per month, often out-of-state.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Client Coaching/ Management: Provide mission-aligned educational expertise to school leaders and teachers, through our professional development and coaching model.  Develop an understanding of client needs and create and implement a plan to address those needs and build lasting capacity. Act as primary contact person for problem/ issue resolution, service delivery, follow-up, coordination for additional resources, project re-scope, etc.

  • Develop and Deliver Professional Learning: As part of the ELP team, develop training tools, modules, communications and best practices documentation to address client needs.  Customize trainings to meet client needs. Deliver professional learning to clients, evaluate results, and revise to more effectively meet client goals.  Design, develop and lead other professional learning events.

  • Business Development: Cultivate new school and district client partnerships.  Use targeted networking, meetings, communications and other tools, as needed.  Generate new client proposals (i.e., Scope of Work) and, as needed, write selected grant proposals and/ or other targeted communications.

  • Strategy Development: Support the ongoing evolution of ELP’s client partnership strategy.  Develop and implement new ideas for tools and services that help clients meet both their student achievement goals and their school and staff development goals.

  • Other: Participate in ELP team and R & D meetings. Provide professional development to Envision’s own schools. Utilize all ELP business systems.  Attend Envision-wide convenings and retreats. Perform other responsibilities as needed.

The Deeper Learning Coach must have:

  • At least 5 years classroom teaching experience

  • Five or more years of experience creating and delivering professional development

  • Shared commitment to equity and a willingness to tackle equity issues with clients

  • Direct experience with the design of student performance assessments

  • Proven success creating and delivering high quality, successful professional learning to teachers and school leaders; and working with traditional and non-traditional school/district decision makers.

  • Proven success building collaborative partnerships

  • Sales/customer orientation with a willingness and ability to articulate and sell ELP’s professional development model to others

  • Experience successfully leading public education teachers and school leaders through the change process

  • Strong project and client management skills

  • Excellent presentation and written communication skills

  • Experience serving traditionally underserved communities

  • Passion for transforming the lives of students

  • A Bachelor’s degree

Ideally, our next Deeper Learning Coach also has:

  • School or district leadership experience

  • Disciplinary expertise in science (the current ELP team has a strong background in math and ELA; we would benefit from more science experience)

  • First-hand experience with portfolio assessment and/or defenses of learning

  • Expertise in project-based learning

  • Master’s Degree in Education, or related

Hours and work year:
This is a year-round, full-time position with three weeks of paid vacation.

Location:
Envision and ELP are based in Oakland, CA. Most of the team lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and, when not traveling, works at our office near downtown Oakland. A couple of our coaches are remote, and ELP is open to coaches working remotely from other parts of the country. That said, we prize face time, and if two candidates are equally qualified, the edge will go to the one who is situated in or willing to move to the Bay Area.

Compensation and benefits:
The starting salary range will be $90–110K, depending on experience. Strong benefits package offered, including medical, dental, vision, paid sick/vacation, optional 403b retirement savings, access to CalSTRS if a current member, life insurance, commuter check, and flexible benefits pre-tax deduction plans.

Hiring timeline:

Envision is accepting applications now through the end of January, 2019. We are actively recruiting for a talented and diverse pool of applicants. Initial phone interviews will be scheduled with candidates of interest on a rolling basis. In February, we will invite select candidates to an in-person interview, which will include a demonstration of skills through a performance task. We hope to reach a decision by March 1, 2019. Start date is ideally shortly thereafter but is negotiable. Hiring is contingent upon successful completion of employment verification and hiring process.
