Located in East Los Angeles, CA, Esperanza College Prep opened its doors to its first 9th grade class in August of 2017 and will expand one grade level per year until we serve students in grades 9-12 in the Fall of 2020. Esperanza College Prep provides students and families with a safe and nurturing school culture that has high expectations and delivers a rigorous personalized college prep experience. Esperanza College Prep will prepare each of its graduates to use their college degrees and careers to make a Positive Multigenerational Change. This free, public charter high school personalizes learning through technology, focuses on developing a strong sense of purpose and builds college ready mindsets to ensure all of its students are ready to go to and graduate from the best colleges in the country. Redesigning the high school experience requires that staff members be willing to respond to feedback and data in real-time, reflect constantly on the impact of their actions and collaborate to continuously improve their practice.
Description
In the teaching function, the English teacher will be responsible for creating, adjusting and executing a rigorous college-prep curriculum that integrates technology and flexible use of space and time in order to deliver the right learning for students at the right moment. Teachers will also coach and mentor students through our Performance Task projects, where students design a project aligned with our yearly theme. In joining our teaching staff at Esperanza College Prep, one can expect to learn from and push their colleagues, all of whom have a strong history of student learning. Teachers will be responsible for enforcing, with 100% consistency, our school-wide student code of conduct to create a safe and rigorous learning environment. The teacher's primary accountability is towards student learning - making significant gains on the ACT with their students.
In the advisory function, the teacher will be responsible for supporting his/her advisory students to meeting our 6 yearly promotion requirements and creating a sense of community amongst this cohort for their four years of high school together. As an advisor, this means building strong relationships and teamwork with their advisory and meeting with students on an individual basis. Advisors at Esperanza College Prep help students set and reach academic goals, support the college-going process and develop socio-emotional skills. The advisor is also responsible for building meaningful relationships with parents/guardians, serving as the primary interface between family and school. The primary accountability of the advising role is in the students meeting their yearly promotion requirements.
In the team function, the teacher will be an active participant and accountable team member. Team members should anticipate learning from and sharing with their colleagues. They will engage in lively debates around planning, student learning outcomes and maintaining a school culture. Teams will be tasked with solving dilemmas as they appear at our school, and team members are the most critical problem-solvers. Team members should neither shy away from conflict nor accountability to results. The primary accountability of a team and its members is measured through our strategic plan goals.
