HELENDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT

 CUSTODIAN I

 

DEFINITION:

 

To keep assigned rooms, buildings, or office space clean and orderly and to keep assigned

grounds clean and free of weeds and debris. Does specialized cleaning as scheduled.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERICS:

 

Positions in this class are assigned custodian duties during a day or swing shift

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

 

May receive immediate supervision from the Principal.

 

May exercise some supervision of student lunch helpers.

 

Exercises  no supervision of adults or other employees.

 

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

 

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

 

Reports needed repairs to the principals office.

 

Moves, adjust, assembles and repairs supplies, equipment and furniture as required.

 

Cleans inside of buildings and windows according to established schedule and procedure.

 

Unlocks and secures buildings as required.

 

Sweeps, scrubs, mops, strips, and waxes floors.

 

Keep walks and asphalt areas free of debris.

 

Changes fluorescent lights.

 

Cleans lunch tables and areas around lunch tables.

 

Keeps rugs and carpet clean.

 

Dusts/cleans furniture, woodwork, chalkboard, and blinds.

 

Cleans rest rooms.

 

Adheres to rules and regulations related to health and safety.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (continued)

Empties trash cans.

 

Assists in setting up classrooms or cafeteria for meetings and/or special events.

 

Maintains security of school property at all times.

 

Orders custodial supplies as budgeted.

 

May be assigned alternative work schedules during the time school is not in session.

 

Performs minor maintenance work at sites as needed.

 

Supports district priorities for a safe and clean campus.

 

Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

            Knowledge;

 

            Materials, chemicals, equipment, and methods used in custodial work.

 

            Ability to:

 

            To Organize and prioritize work load.

            Use cleaning equipment, chemicals and materials with skill and safety.

            Use tools in minor maintenance work.

            Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

            Work effectively in the absence of supervision

            Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in            the        course of work.

            Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

 

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

 

            Experience

            Some janitorial or custodial experience is desirable.

 

            Training:

 

            Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

            Formal or informal training which provides the ability to read and write at a level

            necessary for successful job performance.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

 

            Passage of approved district written test.

 

            Possess an appropriate valid California Driver’s license.

 

            In accordance with district insurance provisions, operate district owned vehicles.

 

            Successfully complete an oral interview.           

 

            Lift objects up to 50 pounds.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

Work includes indoor and outdoor environment: subject to lifting, pushing-bending, stooping, use of chemicals, may be assigned to drive from site-to-site to conduct work.

Keeps assigned classrooms, buildings, office space or other areas clean and orderly, keeps assigned grounds clean and free of weeds and debris, does specialized cleaning as scheduled; performs minor maintenance and repairs to furniture, fixtures and facilities; secures schools, buildings, and facilities; and performs related duties as assigned. Work includes indoor and outdoor environment, lifting, pushing or pulling up to 100 pounds and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds, bending, stooping, use of chemicals, and may drive from site-to-site to conduct work.

Minimum Requirements: The equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance, the passage of a district written Custodial exam, the successful completion of an oral interview, the possession of a good driving record with appropriate valid California Driver's license, TB certificate, Fingerprint Screening and a Physical will be scheduled following the oral interview; clearances will be established prior to first day of assignment.

  • Proof of HS Graduation (Attach to application one of the following documents: HS Diploma or HS Transcript showing date of graduation or GED or Higher Degree)
