JOB SUMMARY Under general direction of the site administrator and/or certificated library staff, independently perform a variety of responsible duties related to the automated processing and circulation of books and instructional media materials; prepare and share stories with classes; perform a variety of clerical tasks in the school library and support activities related to instructional tasks initiated by the supervisor. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Incumbents in the Library Media Technician I classification independently perform a variety of responsible and technical duties related to the processing, circulation, and maintenance of books and instructional media materials at assigned District elementary schools, utilizing an automated system. Incumbents in the Library Media Technician II classification independently perform a variety of responsible and technical duties related to the processing, circulation, and maintenance of books and instructional media materials in an automated middle school library/media center. TYPICAL DUTIES Perform a variety of responsible duties related to the processing and circulation of books and instructional media materials; shelve books and media materials; enter and update information on books and materials into an automated database; assist in training student librarians and volunteers; notify users of overdue items and assess charges for lost/damaged materials; assist students and staff in the use of library/media facilities; maintain an attractive and informational physical appearance of the library and collection; type lists, bulletins, and routine materials; maintain and update circulation records for library media center and conduct yearly inventory; assist in processing new books and non-print materials; review conditions of materials, making necessary repairs as required; prepare and share stories with classes; assist students in locating and using library media materials; monitor student activities while in the library; use automated library systems; assist teachers with requests for materials to accompany classroom units; assist students in using the online patron catalog, cd-rom reference software, and appropriate internet resources; order and maintain library supplies; may be required to administer first aid/CPR; perform related duties as assigned. JOB REQUIREMENTS Any combination of education, training, and/or experience which demonstrates ability to perform the required duties. A typical qualifying background would include graduation from high school or equivalent and one year responsible clerical and library media services experience which included computerized library media operations. Possession of a certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), issued by American Red Cross or American Heart Association must be obtained during the probationary period. Maintain up-to-date certificate in CPR. Knowledge of: Library procedures, terminology and processes. Dewey decimal system; library resources and references; operation of office and audio visual equipment; correct shelving practices; maintenance of print and media resources and equipment; inventory practices and principals; filing and record keeping; operation of computer systems and functions, including circulation/catalog software, word processing, e-mail, and online search strategies; correct English usage, grammar and spelling. Ability to: Use library systems technology to create and maintain records and generate reports. Motivate students to enjoy reading and to use library/media center materials; process, circulate, and maintain Iibrary books, other print and non-print media materials and audio-visual equipment. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; follow written and oral directions; acquire a familiarity with the library collection; work with students and staff in utilizing and maintaining the library/media collection; demonstrate performance of required work functions using a computer, typewriter, copier, and media equipment; demonstrate an appreciation and knowledge of children's literature. PHYSICAL ABILITY The selected candidate must be able to perform the duties of a rigorous work schedule which includes lifting, loading, and unloading, and pass a physical examination and drug screen certifying this ability; sit or stand for extended periods of time to conduct work; use hands and fingers or other means to operate office and audio-visual equipment; stoop and bend to shelve books and other media materials; lift and carry library/media materials, equipment, and supplies.
