HEALTH AIDE

 

 

definition of the position

 

Under general supervision, to perform clerical and first-aid duties in the health office at a school;  to assist the Health Aide Coordinator in implementing the total school health program;  and to do related work as required.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

 

Receives general supervision from Building Principal.

 

Examples of duties

Administer first aid to pupils on school grounds, contact parents if situation warrants it; maintain daily log of students given first aid and aid given; and prepare accident reports in case of serious student injuries on school grounds.

Maintain cumulative health records on students, record results of health screenings; and prepare lists of students needing attention.

Do follow-up verifications on medications and health problems of students.

Assist Health Aide Coordinator in conducting health tests such as vision, hearing, scoliosis and/or dental screening.

Screen students to identify potential or existing health problems by reviewing cumulative records and talking with students, staff and parents.

Order health room supplies and classroom first aid kit supplies through the Health Aide Coordinator.

Dispense medication as prescribed by physician or as requested by parent.

Serve as back up if needed for physically/medically challenged students.

Participate in District-wide training or in training as related to special needs students at their site.

OTHER DUTIES

Perform a variety of clerical, typing, and filing duties as related to health.

 

Assist as time allows in verifying illness for attendance purposes.

Be liaison between school and outside health services/agencies.

 

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Ability to perform a two person lift;

 

Ability to bend body at the knees and hips in order to drag an injured victim;

 

Ability to support a victim who is conscious and who can walk with assistance;

 

Ability to see for purposes of observing students and for reading correspondence, documents and other printed matter;

 

Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels in person and/or on the telephone;

 

Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation in person and/or on the telephone.

 

Physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, reach overhead and run on occasion;

Physical strength sufficient to lift 25 pounds;

Physical stamina sufficient to sit, stand or walk for prolonged periods of time;

Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions.

Manual dexterity sufficient to write, use telephone, business machines (including computers);

 

REQUIRED qualifications

 

knowledge of     First aid principles and techniques;

                                       Universal Precautions;

                                       Basic clerical techniques and procedures, as applied to filing, correspondence, records maintenance, and documents processing.

 

ability to               Administer first aid for minor injuries;

                                       Dispense medications as required;

                                       Perform clerical duties of average difficulty;

                                       Operate a typewriter and computer;

                                       Develop and maintain good personal relationships with children, parents, and school staff;

                                       Achieve a satisfactory rating in a District-approved screening test;

                                       Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action;

                                       Understand and carry out oral and written directions;

REQUIRED

LICENSE                      Maintain possession of a current Red Cross First-Aid Certificate and current C.P.R. Certificate;

 

education               Possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.

 

desirable qualifications

 

DESIRABLE

KNOWLEDGE            Bilingual/Biliterate in English and a designated second language.

 

DESIRABLE                Some experience in health-related fields, such as in a hospital, doctor’s 

experience             office, or social services.
