Paraprofessional Job Description and Responsibilities

 

TITLE: Paraprofessional

 

REPORTS TO / EVALUATED BY: Principal, General Education Teacher(s).

 

JOB GOAL: To assist, support, and work closely with teachers, administrators, and other team members in providing educational benefit for students.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:  To perform teaching assistance and student supervision duties. To assist with classroom discipline and control, physical classroom maintenance, student management, directing of independent study, interpretation/translator, parent-teacher conference management, monitoring during testing and examinations, and one-to-one tutoring.

 

1.     Ability to follow directions with minimal supervision, provides feedback to teacher when appropriate, and is flexible when asked.

2.     Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced and outlined by teaching staff.

3.     Assists the teaching staff in devising special strategies for reinforcing learning materials and skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their academic needs, interests, and abilities.

4.     Monitors students engaged in classroom activities, corrects papers, and supervises curriculum-based testing and makeup work as assigned by the teaching staff.

5.     Serves as the chief source of information and help to any guest teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teaching staff.

6.     Performs clerical, classroom maintenance, and instructional duties as assigned by the teaching staff.

7.     Keeps a generally watchful eye on students and alerts the staff and administration to any problem or special information about an individual student in a timely manner.

8.     Performs assigned supervision of students during lunch periods, play periods, and on field trips, always interacting positively with students while ensuring their safety and wellbeing.

9.     Performs assigned non-instructional classroom duties, such as snack time, toileting, and clothing routines.

10.  Assists teachers in their teaching duties and other general responsibilities such as organizing teaching manuals, providing instructional support in media centers, rendering reinforcement of activities, etc.

11.  Helps teachers and students in executing extracurricular activities and school functions.

12.  Ensures proper care and upkeep of educational materials, equipment, and supplies.

13.  Makes visitors, volunteers, and families of students feel welcome and offers assistance when appropriate.

 

Extended Care & Enrichment Program Assistant

Monday - Friday Afternoons

PROGRAM & POSITION SUMMARY

The Extended Care and Enrichment Program (ECEP) Assistant must enjoy working with school-aged children/teens. S/he is responsible for planning activities, ensuring the safety of all children in the program, serving after school snacks, and interacting with children and their families in a positive manner.  The ECEP Assistant is able to work independently as well as within a team.  The candidate must have a positive attitude, demonstrate leadership skills and serve as a role model to participants in the program.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Playtime

One of the main duties for the ECEP Assistant is planning and coordinating activities for students. This can mean fun play, such as arts and crafts, scrabble, chess, read-alouds, as well as daily indoor and outdoor activities that focus on skills in sports, music, or dance. Children in ECEP spend a lot of time outside the home and away from parents, so it's important that during these activities attendants keep a close eye on the children, documenting for any behavioral concerns or emotional issues they may need to discuss with parents.

Snacks

ECEP Assistant is responsible for serving snacks for children. This includes preparing food and drinks, cleaning dishes, and putting away food.

Schoolwork

ECEP Assistant collaborates with the ECEP Coordinator and teachers to provide additional support for students outside the classroom, helping with reading, math, or other subjects. ECEP Assistant also ensures that students get their homework done.

Safety

As the responsible adult in the room, ECEP Assistant needs to able to respond to basic emergencies and to look out for children's welfare while in their care. ECEP Assistant is trained in CPR and basic first aid. If a child takes medications, the ECEP Assistant also needs to know the protocols involved and know how to respond to a health emergency.

Logistics

ECEP Assistant is responsible for setting up and breaking down the care space. ECEP Assistant is also responsible for writing daily, weekly and/or monthly reports of children's behaviors and habits, and communicating that information to parents, teachers, and the ECEP Coordinator, and the Principal.

 

  • Plans and coordinates activities (small and large) for all students.
  • Maintains all small playground and classroom equipment and storage.
  • Collaborates with ECEP Coordinator, Principal, and teachers on thematic curriculum projects.
  • Mix of movement, fitness activities, cooperative games, group challenges and initiatives, outdoor activities, and competitive games/team sport skill development.
  • Assists ECEP Coordinator with large and small groups for assistance with homework.
  • Communicates proactively with parents regarding student issues.
  • Mediates conflicts between children, focusing on “accountable-talk.”
  • Manages incidents that may occur.
  • Attends trainings, as directed.

ADMINISTRATION 

  • Keeps up-to-date records of attendance.
  • Keeps up-to-date records of weekly lesson plans and changes.
  • Reports any problems or incidents immediately to the Principal and/or teachers and ECEP Coordinator.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age
  • Must have a warm and friendly personality, be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others, be able to relate well to children, and be willing to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with MDJDA program and philosophy.

  • Ability to supervise elementary-aged children.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • An understanding of Diocesan school community life.
