BASIC FUNCTIONS: Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Pupil Services, works with students who require Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) strategies and Social Skills Training (SST), including Discrete Trial Training (DTT) Home and School Programs; provides directed learning experiences; performs clerical duties; and performs related work as required. Employee administers ABA/DTT to autistic students in a home and/or school setting. Employee administers ABA/Social Skills Training to students with Down Syndrome, Mental Retardation, Aspergers or Multiple Disabilities. Assignments may include working at more than one location and with multiple students. The employee will assist Instructional Assistants and Teachers who may also be providing ABA/SST instruction to students. The employee will attend weekly staff meetings, provide program input, demonstrate program procedures, follow or implement program recommendations. The employee will attend a variety of meetings and clinics including advanced training sessions. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: -Works with students who require ABA/SST/DDT home and school programs. -Provide directed learning experiences. -Administer ABA/DTT to autistic students. -Administers ABA/SST to students with Down Syndrome, Mental Retardation, Aspergers or Multiple Disabilities -Assist Instructional Assistants and Teachers when providing ABA/SST instruction to students. -Regularly attend a variety of meetings, clinics and/or training sessions. -Provide program input, demonstrate program procedures and follow or implement program recommendations. -Perform clerical duties and related work as required. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: -Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Discrete Trial Training (DTT) and Social Skills Training (SST). -Appropriate safety precautions and procedures for classroom, home and recreational activities. -Use and operation of a word processor, computer and standard office equipment. Ability to: -Learn of the general needs and behavior of autistic spectrum disorder and/or mentally disabled children. -Assist Instructional Assistants and Teachers in the development and reinforcement of ABA/DTT/SST. -Demonstrate and instruct less experienced Instructional Assistants through modeling and/or shadowing techniques. -Present educational materials, lessons, programs and projects to students with varying degrees of impairment. -Observe and administer drills, conduct probes, implement behavioral strategies and program modifications in accordance with a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). -Work effectively with parents, teachers, students, other staff and the general public. -Run Social Skills groups. -Understand and accurately follow oral and written instructions. -Communicate effectively orally and in writing. -Drive a car. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: -Any combination of training, education and experience equivalent to an AA Degree from a college or university. -Two (2) years of experience in a paid or volunteer position working with children with Autism, Down Syndrome, Multiple Disabilities, Aspergers or Mental Retardation. -Demonstrate knowledge of the general needs and behavior of children with Autism, Down Syndrome, Multiple Disabilities, Aspergers or Mental Retardation. -Experience in the use of strategies with children with Autism, Down Syndrome, Multiple Disabilities, Aspergers or Mental Retardation. -Previous experience in collecting data and writing short narrative reports. -Demonstrate a genuine fondness of children. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Required: -Valid California driver’s license. Desirable: -Completion of Ventura County Autism Certification - Paraprofessional Level. -Possession of a valid American Red Cross Standard First Aid certificate. -Possession of a valid American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certificate. -Certification in one or more areas of Applied Behavior Analysis. WORKING CONDITIONS: Environment: Is subject to classroom, playground and community settings, which may include inside and outside environmental conditions. Subject to driving between sites. Physical Ability: Hearing and speaking to exchange information and to make presentations; dexterity of hands and fingers for operating office equipment, carrying, pushing or lifting classroom equipment and supplies; bending at the waist; lifting objects weighing up to 40 pounds; reaching over head, above the shoulders or horizontally to store equipment; and seeing to observe students in classroom activities.
