POSITION: SUBSTITUTE BUS DRIVER

DEFINITION: On an "on-call" basis and under supervision, operate a school bus over designated route to transport school children; assist in the routine maintenance of a school bus; and do related work as required.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: Drive a bus daily over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, pick up and discharge school children; escort children across the street, stopping traffic when necessary, transport students and teachers on field and athletic trips to various locations, sometimes choosing the best route and making arrival and departure times as scheduled; fuel and wash bus; may sweep and mop bus floor; check tire condition, air brakes, fire extinguishers, first-aid equipment, signal lights, gauge and inspect bus to assure that it is in safe operating condition; prepare reports of mileage, passengers carried, hours worked and mechanical condition of bus, maintain good order among students on bus -- following District policies regarding disciplining of children and contact with parents and other citizens, give first aid when required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be over eighteen years of age (VC-12516). Possession of an appropriate California Driver's License issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles, a current medical certificate, a special certificate to drive a school bus, and verification of first aid training for school bus drivers.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of safe driving practices; provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code; California Highway Patrol School Bus Drivers and Carriers Handbook (HPH 82.7); the Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting school students; and first aid practices. Ability to operate a school bus exercising good judgment and safety precautions; maintain order among children on a school bus; learn designated bus routes, bus drops, and District safety procedures; read map, understand and carry out oral and written instructions; maintain cooperative relationships with students, parents and others.

DESCRIPTION OF PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Medical Category III

1. Positions in this category require ability associated with prolonged periods of heavy physical labor.

2. Position regularly performs heavy physical labor requiring ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and move heavy objects or materials.

3. Great physical demand for strength and endurance.

4. Requires heavy physical effort such as lifting over 50 lbs. on continuous basis.

5. Physical functions involve heavy physical exertion.

6. Lifting over 50 lbs. or carrying any object over 25 lbs.
