MULTIMEDIA TECHNOLOGY ASSISTANT
DEFINITION
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assists a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of students in technology, multimedia, and/or related subject matter areas; assists teachers in maintaining student academic skills while in a computer lab, classroom, and/or library setting; monitors and reports student progress.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
A Multimedia Technology Assistant works under an assigned supervisor and provides instruction to individuals or small groups of students in the use of technology and related subject matters, monitors and reports student progress.
An Education Assistant II works under the close supervision of a teacher or specialist and, within a framework of established procedures, performs a variety of classroom instructional and support duties.
An Education Assistant I performs routine, unskilled classroom instructional and support tasks, under the close supervision of a teacher, which do not require previous knowledge of classroom procedures and practices.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Immediate supervision is provided by a classroom teacher/specialist.
Indirect supervision is provided by an administrator.
No supervision is exercised over District personnel.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Tutors individuals or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher and providing assistance to students with technology (including computer hardware/software), multimedia, and/or library related subject matter.
Prepares lessons as directed by the teacher and evaluates students according to established guidelines.
Monitors and reports behavior of students according to approved procedures; reports progress regarding student performance and behavior.
Provides support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating technology related and audio-visual equipment, operating education computer equipment and distributing and collecting paper and supplies.
Assists students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude and general guidance.
Assists students with technology related equipment including computer hardware/software.
Confers, as needed, with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.
Assures the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and regulations.
Directs group activities of students as assigned.
Participates in meetings and in-service training programs as assigned.
Performs related duties as assigned.
CLASS QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Technology related multimedia programs and equipment.
Commonly used computer software programs (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
Appropriate educational software.
Basic principles of computer operation.
Safe practices in classroom, computer lab/center or library setting.
Child guidance principles and practices.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Ability to:
Assist a certificated teacher and/or assigned administrator with assigned technology, computer, multimedia, and library activities.
Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment.
Communicate and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff and the public including a diverse range of community members.
Provide routine technical assistance and technical advice to students working with computers.
Print and write legibly.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Learn procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Learn to apply and explain policies and procedures related to school and program activities.
Work cooperatively with others.
Monitor, observe and report student behavior according to approved policies and
procedures.
Operate instructional and office equipment.
Drive a personal vehicle to conduct work and visit work sites as necessary.
Be insured at standard vehicle liability and property damage insurance rates and maintain insurability.

Minimum Requirements:
Education:
Consistent with the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 and other related legislation, candidates for this classification must meet the following standards:
The equivalent of graduation from high school and one of the following*:
1. One year of experience at the level of GUSD Education Assistant II or Library Assistant.
2. Completion of at least two years of study (48 semester units or 60 quarter units) at an institution of higher education.
3. Attainment of an Associate of Arts degree or higher.
Additionally, completion of coursework at an accredited institution of higher education in child development, education, and/or psychology is desirable.
*Verification of high school graduation, college units, and degrees will be required.
Experience:
Some experience working with children in an organized setting preferably with the use of a computer and other technologies including multimedia devices.
Any other combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired skills, knowledge or abilities may be considered.
Desirable:
Written and oral proficiency in a second language.
License:
Positions in this classification require the use of personal transportation, and the possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license.
Working Environment:
Classroom, computer lab/center, library environment.
Physical Demands:
Lifting and carrying light objects and instructional equipment typically weighing up to 20 pounds.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of assigned equipment.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
